Some Congressmen use CPRC info during the mark up of the Universal Background Check bill

Feb 15, 2019 | Featured

Congressmen Collins (ranking member), Gaetz, and Gohmert were among those who used Crime Prevention Research Center research during the mark up of the Universal Background Check bill (that covers background checks on private transfers of guns).

Congressman Doug Collins is using a CPRC analysis on concealed handgun permit holders from about five years ago. At the time, there were only 11 million concealed handgun permit holders. Today, there are over 17.5 million permit holders.

Congressman Matt Gaetz also referenced work of ours which showed how law-abiding concealed handgun permit holders are.

Congressman Louie Gohmert used our work on the errors in the background check system.

At the link, the number is 17.25 million and in the 2nd Paragraph above you put the number at 17.5 million. Is the 17.5 million number the new total?

What struck me as completely unacceptable is the number of people in the background who are obviously disinterested in what is being said … staring off into space, chatting with one another, joking around, and engrossed in cellphones. That speaks volumes about an important issue that is obviously little more than an insignificant distraction for some in attendance . How telling and how disconcerting.

So is there really a question of whether Trump reduced crime in DC? Did the Washington Post inaccurately report murder data to make the drop look smaller than it actually is?

The Washington Post doesn't really want to give President Trump credit for the drop in crime in DC. Please look at the graph above and notice that there was a discrete change in August and September 2025 (and the change only started about half way through August on...
