Nov 13, 2018 | Featured

Dr. John Lott appeared on the One America News Network’s The Daily Ledger to discuss what can be done to stop mass public shootings such as the attack at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California on November 7th. He also talked about the media bias in covering the attack and our new work in explaining how these attacks compare to those in the rest of the world.

If more guns make us safer and reduce gun fatalities, then fewer guns would make us less safe and would increase gun fatalities. But, that makes no sense. Japan has virtually no guns and had 11 gun deaths. Both Britain and Australia reduced guns in circulation and also reduced gun deaths. How would Dr. Lott explain that?

The point that we have made over again in posts here. Regarding Japan, the point to make clear is that Japan has had a very low murder rate for as long as data is available, and more importantly, the guns were banned by private citizens. Some point to the drop in homicides after the 1958 gun law, but they ignore the 1946 regulations under the Allied Occupation and the 1950 Order that continued “the general prohibition of possession of guns by civilians.” The issue here is to separate out whether it is gun control or something else different about Japan that is important, and unless you can see a change before and after there has been a change in gun control laws it is difficult to infer anything about the impact of gun control laws.

Similar discussions exist for the impact of the 1920 and 1956 gun laws.
