In each of the last nine months of 2019 there was a record number of NICS checks, and January 2020 has set yet another record. The year 2019 had 28.4 million NICS checks, about 800,000 more than the previous record set in 2016.

Black Friday NICS background checks break previous record by 9.4%

Adjusting NICS checks for background checks for Concealed Handgun Permits

You can compare these adjusted numbers to the official NICS numbers.

This adjustment is significant — the NICS numbers are 42.6% higher in 2013 than these adjusted numbers.  But the numbers show similar changes in gun ownership over time.  The adjusted numbers show a 64.5% surge in gun sales from 2008 to 2013, while the NICS numbers show a 65.9% change.…

. . . John R. Lott, Jr., author of More Guns Less Crime, doesn’t think Hunt’s gun purchase indicates that gun regulations should change.

He said studies consistently show that background checks don’t reduce violent crime, but they can produce “false positive” results that block law-abiding citizens from purchasing a gun.
