Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has issued an opinion on Texas’ new law that allows carrying concealed handguns on college campuses.  Some public universities, in particular the University of Texas at Austin, have already made initial recommendations.  The most important parts of the opinion are:

University of Texas at Austin releases initial recommendations for where permitted concealed handguns will be allowed on campus

The panel recommending the rules for concealed carry on campus may not have had ideal recommendations, but they are at least a lot better than it might have been.  Some of the restrictions include that the gun must be carried in “a holster that completely covers the trigger; semiautomatic handguns must be carried without a chambered round of ammunition.”  Bans from UT athletic events and dorms are disappointing, as there is no evidence that there is a problem with either type of place.  …

Candidate’s statement on gun-free zones after Oregon shooting

Some evidence that the political debate is changing.

“This campus was a gun free zone and yet somehow this individual got onto campus with not one gun but several guns. So, before we start calling for more laws I think we ought to consider why we don’t enforce the laws we have.”  — Carly Fiorina

“it’s clear that gun free zones are sitting duck zones” — Gov.…

With at least 10 dead and 20 injured, we have had yet another mass public shooting in a gun-free zone.

The original document can be found here.  The campus did have three security officers, but they were also disarmed.  Of course, uniformed security officers have limited usefulness in stopping these attacks because people in uniforms are easy targets.…

Black Pastor announces she and some members of her congregation will carry guns at her church

This pastor announced that she got the idea of letting guns into her church several years ago, but is only putting it into action now because of the church shooting in Charleston.  Her gun was purchased through donations.  It may not make the most sense for this pastor to announce that she will be keeping the gun at her pulpit, but given that members of her congregation will also carrying concealed handguns laws, it is probably safe.  …
