Updated: Comparing conviction rates between police and concealed carry permit holders

A recent study provides numbers on police convictions over a three-year period from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2007.  This data was put together by doing news searches on media sources throughout the US.  There are two reasons that their method makes police look relatively more law-abiding than they actually are.

CPRC at Fox News: “Let’s not be so quick to believe gun-control rhetoric”

John Lott’s newest piece at Fox News on the New York Times reporting the latest Violence Policy Center claims starts this way:

People walking the streets with guns pose a danger to others, right? With 12 million Americans across all 50 states now having concealed handgun permits, one would think that this question would have been settled one way or another.

67-year-old concealed handgun permit holder fatally shoots one of the two men who tried to rob him

An attempted robbery of a 67-year-old black man by two other men occurred in Cobbs Creek Park, Upper Darby, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, February 4th  (click on the above picture to enlarge).  The park is a little west of the Philadelphia Zoo.  The police chief says in a video to NBC 10 News: “to be quite frank with you, [the permit holder] did what he had to do.”  From the Delaware County Daily Times:

New Hope City (MN) Council Member John Elder responds to attack on council by drawing gun

When shots rang out in the New Hope City Council (Minnesota), Council Member John Elder, a former police officer, drew his permitted concealed handgun to protect those who were at the meeting. An armed attacker shot at a group of uniformed police officers, wounding two of them (they are OK).  Other officers returned fire, killing the man.…

Counties around Portland, Oregon experience explosive 41% or more growth in concealed handgun permits from 2011 to 2014

Portland’s GoLocalPDX has a lead news story on the growth of concealed carry permits in the Portland area.  Not enough information is presented in the article to determine the permit growth rate for all three counties, but Multnomah and Washington counties had a 41 percent growth in permits between 2011 and 2014 (42840/30429).  …

Dramatic video of a passerby with a concealed handgun permit saving a woman who was being attacked in her car

From CBS-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth about a case in Southlake, Texas:

A North Texas man is being heralded a hero after police said he held a man at gunpoint who was assaulting a woman.
The tense standoff broke out on Friday near the intersection of Carroll Avenue and Southlake Boulevard.
Witnesses reported seeing a man standing in the middle of the street pointing a gun straight at the passenger of a red vehicle with the door open.

Tragedy of Idaho permit holder illustrates lopsidedness of news coverage on guns, CPRC gets extensive news coverage over number of concealed handgun permits in Idaho

The horrible tragic death of Veronica J. Rutledge in Idaho obtained massive national news coverage. The 29-year-old mother was accidentally shot to death when her two-year-old reached into her handbag and fired her handgun.

The news coverage generally provided little context for the story. The main context was provided by data that had been put together by the Crime Prevention Research Center.…

Two cases within a couple days where concealed handgun permit holders stopped robberies

One customer was killed here, but without the permit holder in this case, multiple customers might have been killed.  St. Louis (occurred on Tuesday night, December 2, 2014):
