A plurality of Americans believe that armed citizens are the best way to protect you and your family in the case of a mass shooting

Jul 23, 2022 | Survey

A new Trafalgar Group survey of 1,078 likely general election voters from July 7th to 10th, 2022, shows they believe that armed citizens are much more effective in protecting people in a mass shooting than local police or federal agents. While Democrats are much less confident than Republicans that local law enforcement and government officials can identify and stop a violent person before they start a mass shooting, Democrats believe that local police and federal agents are better at protecting people than either Republicans or Independents. Similarly, blacks are the least confident racial group that local law enforcement and government officials can identify and stop a violent person before they start a mass shooting, but blacks think that local police are better than armed citizens and much better than federal agents at protecting people. Asians are very similar to whites in believing armed citizens offer the best protection, and more Hispanics believe that armed citizens are are the best protection than support other options. This survey is similar to a recent YouGov survey on the benefit of armed teachers.
