Our dataset of Mass Public Shooting List US 1998-March 2021 provides information on the ages, political views, and religious beliefs of mass public shooters and these killers’ race and gender. And it also provides information on the types of guns used. Eleven percent of these attacks involve only rifles of any type, with “assault rifles” being a subset of that. Rifles are used either by themselves or used in conjunction with other weapons in 31% of the attacks. By contrast, handguns are used in 55% of mass public shootings.
