But if someone is intent on breaking laws against murder, it is safe to assume that laws creating “gun-free zones” will not deter them. In fact, in many cases, it seems to attract them, as they can feel comforted knowing that they will be able to wreak their havoc upon a large number of helpless victims unable to fight back. . . .
While some fear average citizens carrying weapons in public, “Concealed handgun permit holders are extremely law-abiding,” according to a study this year by the Crime Prevention Research Center. It found that they commit only about one-sixth the rate of firearms violations as police. . . .

While the total number of gun owners is disputed, the number of Americans legally carrying concealed weapons has soared over the past decade. According to the pro-gun Crime Prevention Research Center, the number of concealed weapon permits granted by states has skyrocketed from 4.6 million in 2007 to 12.8 million this year. According to the center, the granting of concealed weapon permits has increased by 156% for men and by 270% for women since 2007. These figures do not include data from the eight states that do not require citizens to obtain a permit for carrying a concealed weapon. . . .

John Lott Jr, a Virginia economist and Fox News commentator, spoke in support of the legislation for upwards of 20 minutes, saying concealed permit holders hold a “strategic advantage” in mass shooting incidents that open carry advocates and uniformed law enforcement officials lack.
Potential mass shooters could pick “another venue where they don’t have to worry about somebody in uniform being stationed there”, Lott told the panel.
Lott also opposed creating outright gun-free zones.
“If you go to create a gun-free zone, the people who obey these rules are the law-abiding citizens, not the criminals,” he said. . . .

From the research of Professor John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center: “Since at least 1950, all but two public mass shootings in America have taken place where general citizens are banned from carrying guns. In Europe, there have been no exceptions. Every mass public shooting has occurred in a gun-free zone. And Europe is no stranger to mass shootings. It has been host to three of the six worst K-12 school shootings and by far the worst mass public shooting perpetrated by a single individual.” . . .

California is the first state to pass “a modern ban on people being able to carry a gun on college campuses,” John Lott, the head of the Crime Prevention Research Center, told the New York Times. Conversely, 10 states have passed laws explicitly permitting concealed carry on campuses. Five of those states passed their laws since 2007, a year notable for the mass shooting at Virginia Tech.
California Assemblywoman Shannon Grove voted against the measure in her state. “If you put up signs saying, ‘No guns allowed on campus,’ that’s not going to stop people who are going to do you harm,” she told the Times, adding that such a sign could inhibit qualified permit-holders from defending themselves. . . .

Fast fact: Since 2007, the number of concealed weapons permits in the U.S. increased 4.6 million to more than 12.8 million, and murder rates dropped by about 25 percent, according to the report from the Crime Prevention Research Center.

For what it’s worth, my passion for protecting and defending our Second Amendment right is as it should be – purposeful and intense. Matter of fact, I believe having gun-free zones anywhere in this country is a crock. The argument for such places in which law abiding citizens cannot and, thereby, do not carry guns but whack-job violent criminals do is about as insane as it gets. In addition to the obvious, here’s why: in October 2014, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) released a report showing that 92 percent of mass public shootings between January 2009 and July 2014 took place in gun-free zones. Using but a mere dose of logic, it’s idiotic to disallow any citizen the right to arm themselves in a country of violent lunatics as a way to somehow reduce violent crime and mass shootings.

Like many Americans, I frequently carry a gun. I’ve done so for over 30 years without ever laying hand to it in need. Professor John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center reports that some 12.8 million people, over 5.2 percent of the adult U.S. population, are licensed to carry a concealed handgun. In addition to concealed carry license holders in all 50 states, seven states require no permit at all for concealed carry, and 40 states have few restrictions on carrying as long as the gun is visible. .

In response to Heidi Kendall’s (Oct. 9) opinion calling for firearm background checks, I suggest that, instead of emotional responses, she consider checking the work of professor John Lott where his research concluded there is no strict correlation between background checks and illegal/criminal use of guns. . . .
