Concealed handgun permit holders much less likely to drive recklessly than other drivers

Some public health researchers have attempted to link permitted concealed carry to aggressive or reckless driving.  Before turning to two of the papers by public health researchers, let’s look at some of the data on driving behavior.  Just as handgun permit holders are incredibly law-abiding, they also drive much more responsibly than the general public.

Fred Kunkle at the Washington Post has a story about the record number of seizures of guns at airports and is calling for stiffer penalties.

. . . The increase in gun seizures is no doubt a reflection of record numbers of air travelers and the rising number of Americans who have permits to carry concealed weapons.

One of the big questions about concealed carry is how frequently permit holders carry their guns.  At least 6.5% of the adult population has a concealed handgun permit, but with 14 states allowing people to carry without a permit, it is hard to know how many people actually carry.  But a new Pew Research Center Survey makes it possible to estimate the percentage of the adult population in the US carries guns with them and how frequently they carry them, though their number would include both concealed and open carry.  …

Muslims responsible for at least 80% of the worldwide bombings killing at least 4 people during 2014-15

During 2014 and 2015 there were 1,761 bombings in the world that killed at least four people.  Of those, 1,401 were by radical Muslims, 58 were non-Muslims, and 302 were unknown.  It seems likely that most of those unknown attacks were also by radical Muslims, but even if that isn’t the case, at least 80% of these bombings were done by radical Muslims and possibly as few as 3.3% are done by non-Muslims.  …
