Dr. Kesten Green, University of South Australia Business School and a Fellow at the Crime Prevention Research Center, debated two gun control advocates Samantha Lee Chair, Gun Control Australia, and Professor Andrew Goldsmith Strategic Professor of Criminology at Flinders University. Their debate took place on the Australian Broadcasting Corp’s Sunday Extra show. Despite being out numbered two-to-one and the presentations even more lopsided in terms of time and having a host who was sympathetic to the other side, Kesten got some facts out that most Australians had probably never previously heard. Back in the 90’s I used to drive from Campbelltown to Dapto to the rifle range. At the range I felt completely safe. The most terrifying thing was the drive down on the Appin Road, a road that has seen many deaths.
By the way Samantha’s comments regarding many of the mass murders in Australia were committed by legal gun owners is false. The perpetrator of the Port Arthur massacre was not a legal gun owner, nor were the Milperra massacre guns legally owned (although the firearms and knifes & bats used in the Milperra incident are still legally available).
I would also like to point out that no study has been made to ask the question what would have happened if out of the 20 or so people in the Broad Arrow Cafe & Gift Shop in Port Arthur, just 3 or 4 people had a concealed handgun permit what the result would have been. I think the death toll would have been much lower, especially as the only way out was past the gunman.
