The CPRC hired McLaughlin & Associates to survey 1,000 general election voters on August 25th, 2026 (cross tabs available here) regarding general election voters’ views on allowing teachers to carry concealed handguns at schools. While voters overwhelmingly approve of the idea by a 51.4% to 35.7% margin, voters with children in K-12 schools are significantly more supportive by a 57.3% to 30.2% margin. Those voters without children in school still support armed teachers, but at a lower rate 50.2% to 38%. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed had children in K-12 schools.
Only three demographic or political groups oppose armed teachers: Democrats (51.3% opposed to 35.7% supportive), liberals (48.9% to 35.1%), and those classified as “other race” (47.8% to 39.2%). Regionally, respondents in the East are essentially evenly divided, with opposition narrowly exceeding support, 42.8% to 42.3%.
By contrast, support leads among every other racial group, with Asians and whites showing the strongest support; among both men and women, although men support the policy more strongly (even women favor it 45.9% to 38.6%); across every age group, peaking among 30- to 40-year-olds at 55.8% to 31.2%; across every type of community, including urban areas at 49.7% to 35.1%; and at every income level, with the wealthiest respondents showing the strongest support at 78.6% to 19.4%. Conservatives, Republicans, those in the south, and those in rural areas strongly support armed teachers.
