Jul 3, 2026 | Gun Control Advocates, Research

ChatGPT was asked to evaluate the top academic researchers in terms of their impact on the gun control debate on a 1 to 10 scale. ChatGPT also writes of John Lott’s research: “Probably the single most influential empirical researcher in legislative debates over concealed carry, right-to-carry laws, permitless carry, and Second Amendment litigation. His work has been cited in countless state legislative hearings, congressional testimony, amicus briefs, and expert reports over nearly 30 years.” On the gun control side it writes about Phil Cook: “Perhaps the most influential academic on the gun-control side. His research has shaped federal policy discussions, National Academies reports, and the work of agencies such as the CDC and DOJ. Frequently cited in legislative testimony and litigation.”
