A 36-year-old man who died in a New Year’s Day shooting was killed in an act of self-defense after he confronted a couple outside their home, investigators said.
The State Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and determined the homeowner’s actions were justified, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives said around 12:27 a.m. on January 1, the man, identified as Nicholas Palomo, had allegedly tried to abduct the homeowner’s wife minutes earlier while she walked her dog.
After she ran home and alerted her husband, the husband went outside, confronted Palomo and fired a single shot as Palomo advanced toward him, investigators said…

A North Oakland barber who was initially arrested on suspicion of murder has been released from jail and prosecutors haven’t charged him with a crime, court records show.
The 35-year-old barbershop owner allegedly shot and killed 30-year-old Tariq Roddy Figueroa at around 1 p.m. on Jan. 1, the first homicide of 2026 in Oakland. He was initially arrested on suspicion of murder after a witness identified him as a shooter.
But police later obtained surveillance footage showing Figueroa was armed with a pistol when he approached the barbershop on the 4500 block of Market Street, authorities said.
Figueroa and the barber reportedly knew one another and there was a conflict brewing between them, authorities said. They argued that afternoon and the barber told Figueroa to leave, according to authorities.
Then, upon seeing Figueroa approach with a gun, the barber grabbed a rifle from his shop and shot Figueroa at least once, authorities said…

Bibb County deputies say a person of interest connected to Friday’s shooting on Shurling Drive voluntarily identified himself and was determined to not be the “primary aggressor” after speaking with investigators.
Deputies say the investigation, including a review of video surveillance, revealed the reported victim “was discovered to be the primary aggressor in the incident that led to him being critically wounded.”
Deputies say the “primary aggressor” pulled out a firearm in an attempt to rob the person of interest of a firearm in his possession and that the person of interest legally defended himself against the “imminent threat imposed against him.”
At this time, no charges have been brought. The shooting remains under investigation.

Another caller told dispatchers the shooter claimed he was acting in self-defense.
“Two of them continuously hit him,” the caller said. “So, he pulled out the weapon and shot them. Then he felt like he was about to be attacked, so he got in his car and drove away.”…

According to a probable cause affidavit, another man involved in the altercation, Joseph Glenn, left with a facial laceration and a bruised eye. The affidavit says Glenn is in a relationship with Grant-Martin’s mother.
While interviewing Glenn, he told police he was “pistol-whipped” initially, but then told them he was shot and believed Grant-Martin shot twice. He told police Grant-Martin and three other people surrounded him before the altercation unfolded.
Grant-Martin had also pointed a gun at his mother, according to police.
The probable cause affidavit says Glenn shot three or four times after he was hit. It adds that detectives recovered four spent shell casings from the scene.
Glenn then told police the incident stemmed from one of Grant-Martin’s friends being arrested in Louisville with guns and drugs.
Police later confirmed Glenn was the one who shot Grant-Martin in the chest.
During the investigation, police interviewed several witnesses, who confirmed that Grant-Martin pistol-whipped Glenn and was shot…

Police then interviewed a 37-year-old man who told them Garcia had shot a 34-year-old man during an altercation inside a building at the location. Four people were shot Sunday afternoon near Fort Pierce during what investigators believe was an ambush related to a Facebook Marketplace transaction, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 3600 block of Avenue R at approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, deputies secured the scene, rendered immediate aid to the victims and coordinated medical care with St. Lucie County Fire District.
