On Dana Loesch’s Relentless to discuss false claims about number of school shootings and attacks by “right-wingers”

Nov 4, 2018 | Featured

Dr. John Lott talked to Dana Loesch on her show Relentless about the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School releasing a new resource they’re calling a “K-12 School Shooting Database.” They also discussed the false claims about attacks, such as the shooting at the Pittsburgh synagogue, being done by “right-wingers.”

From 2000 and on, the NPS database has 653 case, which is 350 cases more than what the Crime Prevention Research Center has on our list and we have around 20-30 cases which are not on their list.

1)The database is built on news reports, which are notoriously inaccurate around these events. To take that into account, the database’s developers included what they call a “reliability score.” This allowed them to rank the information from 1 to 5, with 1 representing, “Independent Single Author/Moderator Blog, report/list lacking citations, or cited source cannot be located (e.g., newspaper headline title and story do not appear in searches).” Among those 350 cases that we missed, 298 of them are ranked 2 or below.

2) As with other lists put out by groups such as Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown, they included cases such as robbery and/or incident which was an accidental discharge by a law enforcement or school resource officer.
