International Crime Comparisons: US relatively safe in terms of violent crime

Jul 24, 2015 | Featured

One of the big problems with comparing crime rates across countries is that there are big differences in what constitutes a crime and even whether people report crimes to police. If people don’t think that the police in a country will be able to solve the crime, it reduces their incentive to report the crime to police. The International Crime Victimization Survey allows for comparable numbers across countries.

Violent crime here includes robbery, sexual assaults, and assaults.  The US is below the average and media violent crime rates for these 17 countries.  The median country is France.

Unfortunately, the last year that is available is 2000. After the UN took over the program, they shut down the survey. Still, the relative numbers are similar across years.
