We are the only organization of our kind. Our research frequently appears in academic studies, media coverage, court cases, and legislative debates.
Mark Levin noted, “You know John Lott is called on occasions like this because the guy is like the ‘Rain Man’ with statistics. And, unfortunately, given the barrage of propaganda and mythology that is thrown at us and people like us, you have to address it.”
“I tell people I think you are single handedly holding up our side of the debate using real data against fake Bloomberg funded studies and error filled federal government data,” Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) recently noted.
Our mission is to conduct rigorous, academic-quality research. We have published recent studies in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Review of Law & Economics and Academia Letters. We break out of academic and ideological bubbles by publishing op-eds in major outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post, talk at college campuses, and debating whoever is willing to debate.
Even as Democratic mayors claim that they have crime under control, a recent AP-NORC poll found that 81 percent of Americans believe crime is a “major problem” in large cities. We continue working hard to expose the media’s misinformation that benefits Democrats. Government regulations prevent us from telling people how to vote, but we can — and do — correct false claims in the media.
When I testified before the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Commissioner Peter Kirsanow highlighted how our work challenges the left: “Lott has testified before the commission several times during my tenure. Of the hundreds of witnesses who’ve appeared before the commission, no one has been treated with greater hostility by progressives. I’ve long suspected that such treatment was due to his bringing hard data to the table — which are more difficult for progressives to refute or spin than mere opinion.”
Over the past year, we have published peer-reviewed studies, 53 op-eds, 234 radio interviews, and 69 television interviews, in addition to numerous podcasts. Our op-eds have also reached international audiences in Canada and Argentina. I testified before state legislatures and delivered lectures across the U.S., Chile, Brazil, and Argentina.
Highlights from Our Recent Work
- Correcting FBI data: We exposed major errors in the FBI’s reporting on active shooting cases. From 2014 to 2024, the FBI claimed legally armed civilians stopped only 3.7% of attacks. Our analysis proves the real figure is 36% overall, and 53% in non–gun-free zones. The inaccuracies have grown worse over time — in 2024, while the FBI claimed there were no cases of civilians stopping attacks, we documented 48% of attacks stopped, or 63% outside gun-free zones.
- Analyzing attacker motives: We continue to uncover how mass murderers themselves, in their diaries and manifestos, explain why they target gun-free zones.
- Challenging false media claims: We countered inaccurate reports from the Anti-Defamation League, which wrongly blamed most extremist violence on the political right.
- Exposing AI bias: Our research revealed that left-leaning AI chatbots increasingly show political bias when responding to questions about crime and gun control — a trend that has worsened as the election approaches.
- Publishing peer-reviewed studies: We published academic research demonstrating that people carrying concealed handguns reduces violent crime.
- Correcting false claims about child mortality: We debunked the false narrative that firearms are the leading cause of death among children.
- Documenting the collapse in law enforcement: We showed how crime is rising but people are reporting them less frequently to police because of low arrest rates.
- Tracking defensive gun use: We expanded our database of cases where concealed handgun permit holders stopped likely mass public shootings and other active shooter incidents.
- Breaking down shooting data: We analyzed mass public shooting patterns by race, age, sex, firearm type, and political affiliation, giving policymakers and the public a clearer understanding of these tragedies.
- And much more!
The Crime Prevention Research Center is the only organization that has been capable of doing research to balance off the onslaught over the years from the hundreds of millions of dollars already spent on “research” by billionaires such as Michael Bloomberg, George Soros, and John Arnold.
We also continue to update our reports that we have been doing for years on the annual number of concealed handgun permits, mass public shootings that have been stopped by concealed handgun permit holders, permit holders saving the lives of police, list of mass public shootings in gun-free zones, and much more.
You and I know that violent crime has increased over the last few years, and that despite the misuse of FBI data, it has increased. Jails released inmates en masse, and politicians ordered police to stand down and cut their budgets. Democrats demonize law enforcement at the same time they work to prevent people from protecting their families and themselves.
Many politicians clearly don’t understand this.
No one else is putting together the data and research to push back against gun control advocates’ misinformation. With Michael Bloomberg alone spending hundreds of millions of dollars on incorrect research, we have our work cut out for us.
