A new Rasmussen Reports survey in September shows overwhelming support for requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in national elections. Indeed, only liberals oppose proof of citizenship. Even Democrats as a whole support it by a clear 56%-to-33%. Interestingly, Hispanics are even stronger supporters than whites, Blacks, and other groups.
All groups (even liberals by a significant margin (51%-to-40%)) think that preventing illegal immigrants from voting is important, though liberals are again the odd group out when asked if it is worth shutting down the government to ensure that a law requiring a proof of citizenship to register to vote (36% support to 60% opposed). However, on this last question Democrats are equally divided at 47%-to-47%.
