A Series of Mass Public Shootings in Brazil and South Africa

Feb 23, 2023 | Mass Public Shootings

These mass shootings in other countries don’t get much news coverage in the US or the west. Here is an example of our earlier work (here, here, and here).

Brazil, February 22, 2023: Seven people were murdered in a Brazilian pool hall massacre.

. . . “The way it happened, it is clear that some victims may not even have been involved with the game that was taking place at the establishment,” Police Lt. Romening dos Santos Silva said, according to multiple media outlets.

Police say the shooters are Edgar Ricardo de Oliveira, 30, and Ezequias Souza Ribeiro, 27, and they are still on the run.

The men allegedly lost two consecutive games in Sinop City, in the state of Mato Grosso on Tuesday.

Graphic surveillance video from the scene showed one of the men line victims up against a wall at gunpoint while his companion grabbed a shotgun from a pickup truck.

Within a few seconds, the man with the pump-action shotgun began his terrifying assault, shooting people at point-blank range. He appeared to pick his targets one by one as the other man joined in with his handgun. . . .

South Africa, January 28, 2023: Gunmen killed eight people and wounded three others at a birthday party in South Africa at the weekend before fleeing, police said.

South Africa, July 2023: Two separate mass public shootings conducted within hours of each other left 19 people dead.

— “Attackers armed with rifles and pistols opened fire in the Orlando East bar in the township of Soweto in the early hours of Sunday, killing 15 people and wounding nine, police said.

— “Police confirmed a second apparently random shooting hours earlier, at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, in a tavern in Pietermaritzburg, 500 km southeast of Soweto, which saw four people killed and eight wounded.
