Obama Speaking to Brazilians about gun laws in the US

Jun 2, 2019 | Featured

Americans got a timely reminder about Obama’s views on guns. Last Thursday, he addressed a large Brazilian audience about American gun laws. Obama claimed:

“Our gun laws in the United States don’t make much sense. Anybody can buy any weapon, any time, without much, if any, regulation. They can buy [guns] over the internet, they can buy machine guns.”

Seriously? Anybody can buy any gun? Without much or any regulation?

This video reminds us of the extremes to which Obama was always willing to go, making completely false claims about guns and gun ownership in the United States.

Can anyone buy a gun? Well, they certainly can try to buy a gun, but if you are a criminal or someone who is otherwise prohibited, it would be illegal. If you are a criminal or other prohibited person and you somehow get a hold of a gun, it is still illegal for you to have that gun. Obama sure makes it sound like absolutely anyone can get the gun legally.

Can people buy any gun? Take a simple example. Machine guns made after 1986 may not be purchased or possessed by an ordinary civilian. Even machine guns made before 1986 may only be purchased after the extensive paperwork and wait times that accompany all National Firearms Act gun purchases.

There are many federal and state regulations in the US. In some states, you have to buy your gun in your state of residence. Yet, Obama claims: “Anybody can buy any weapon, any time, without much, if any, regulation.”

Similarly, when a person purchases a firearm online from an out-of-state retailer, the gun must first be shipped to a local FFL, where the purchaser must appear in person to fill out the federally required paperwork and satisfy the background check requirements.

Just the latest incidence of how flaky and disingenuous “The Smartest Man in the Room” is and always has been.
He’s trying to influence the changes in legislation regulating new ideas regarding greater civilian access to firearms being pushed by their President, in part as one means to start to lower the murder rates.

So Brasil is in the process of loosening a couple of its firearms laws and Obama wants to get ahead of it and put a stop to it. And he’s still peddling the lie that it’s easier to buy a gun than a gallon of milk. Wonderful. He is the last person who should be making any statements about our gun laws.
