Defensive Gun Uses stopping Domestic Violence over last six months

A 48-year-old man who was shot in the chest by his on-again, off-again girlfriend has died from his injuries, San Antonio police said.

Police also said they found the woman, in her late 50s, with her tooth knocked out. They said they believe the pair got into a physical altercation.

Officials said the woman told them he was assaulting her, and she went into her bedroom for safety.

The woman, fearing further injury, found the gun she kept in her room and fired once at the man after he said he was going to kill her.

Officials said a woman won’t be charged after shooting her ex-boyfriend who was trying to break into her house through a window Thursday in East Price Hill.

The shooting took place around 4:30 a.m. on the 2500 block of Ring Place.

Police said officers at the scene found Dante Ruff suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He was taken to University Hospital where he underwent surgery and is in serious but stable condition.

Police said the Ruff kicked out the A/C unit and tried to break through the front window.

Police said the woman had a protection order against her ex-boyfriend and had a concealed carry permit. Her five kids were upstairs at the time, police said.

A Winter Haven woman allegedly shot and killed her abusive husband after he attacked her and her cousin on Friday.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said things escalated after Tyrinda Goosby, 44, and her husband, Trevor Goosby, 46, started arguing about a game she was playing online. Trevor went into their bedroom to grab a firearm, then returned and began physically attacking his wife, according to Judd.

Tyrinda’s cousin, Patrice Wilson, 44, was at the home and tried to intervene by threatening to hit Trevor with a jar of peppers. Judd said Trevor ended up taking the peppers from Patrice and broke the jar over her head, leaving her with an “ugly laceration.


Caledonia, Wis, May 28, 2019 (WDJT CBS Channel 8)

Police responded to the house on Tanglewood Avenue for a call of shots fired inside the home Tuesday morning.

“Officers received information from a female who lives at the residence that her father had been shot,” said Captain Brian Wall from the Caledonia Police Department.

Police say 55-year-old Robert Luckfield Jr. was arguing with his daughter and her boyfriend over money.

The argument escalated to where Luckfield began shooting at the couple-and they retreated to a bedroom, arming themselves with a rifle.

“There was a shot fired from the deceased at the other parties, and then at one point, the boyfriend armed himself with a rifle, there was an exchange between the two of them, and then more shots were fired,” said Captain Wall. About 8 shots were fired in total. The boyfriend telling police he feared for his life, and defended himself and his girlfriend.

The Jackson Police Department is investigating a domestic-related shooting on Brown Street.

A male was shot by his girlfriend after assaulting her with a blunt object.

The male and female were transported with injuries.


Madison County, Ind. May 20, 2019 (WXIN Fox 59)

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Hunter Holloway had been involved in an altercation with his family earlier that day and had another one in the evening.

Police said he threatened family members with a shotgun for several hours. At one point, after family members tried to calm him down, Holloway’s father ran to retrieve a handgun. That led to a confrontation between the two men; Holloway pointed the shotgun at his father, who fired a single round that struck Holloway near the abdomen.


Fort Worth, Texas, May 15, 2019 (Star Telegram)

Believing that her boyfriend was retrieving knives to cut her, a woman shot him Wednesday inside their south Fort Worth house, police said.

The woman shot the man five times, in his torso and his arm, Fort Worth police said. The man was in critical condition in the minutes after he was shot and was in surgery at John Peter Smith Hospital. Police did not release his name or age.


Dauphin County, PA, May 10, 2019 (Penn Live)

Magisterial District Judge Sonya McKnight shot and wounded her husband in their home Friday morning and Harrisburg police are investigating, according to two sources familiar with the investigation.

The shooting happened at 8:34 a.m. in the 2700 block of Lexington Street, police said.

The man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to District Attorney Fran Chardo, who declined to identify the shooter or person who was shot in the incident. Police have since announced that the man has undergone surgery, and he is now listed in stable condition.

But Chardo confirmed that the shooting involved a violation of an order of protection from abuse. And Chardo confirmed the man shot was the subject of the PFA order. Detectives are investigating to determine whether the shooting was justified, Chardo said.

About 6:12 p.m., CCPS, Clayton County Sheriff’s deputies and EMS responded to the 9100 block of Jenni Circle in Jonesboro in reference to a home invasion.

When they arrived, the woman told police her ex-boyfriend was lying on the floor upstairs. Officers found the man lying face-down and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman told police her ex-boyfriend “had been sending her text messages throughout the day, threatening to take her life.”

Investigators say a man died late Tuesday night on Pisgah Road in Dresden after he was trying to break into his ex-girlfriend’s house.

“A call came in shortly after 11 o’clock, what was believed to be a prowler call, and the deputies responding, and while they were going, the call was updated that somebody at the scene had been shot,” Captain Randall McGowan of the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department said.

Investigators say 20-year-old Anthony Perry parked his car down the road and walked to the woman’s house.

“An off-again, on-again boyfriend of the woman who lived at the house,” McGowan said. “Their relationship was off at the present time, and he was upset about it, and he was trying to get in the house to talk to her, and he broke a window out of the master bedroom.”

For safety reasons, investigators do not want us to show the house the man died at, but they say he was killed on the front porch by the woman’s son.

“The woman’s juvenile son went outside trying to get the man to leave, and a confrontation took place, and the juvenile ended up shooting Mr. Perry,” McGowan said.

Benjamin D. Rodriguez, 19, was accused of shooting and killing his father, 43-year-old Jose Rodriguez, at their Outlook home Wednesday. He was held on suspicion of first-degree murder.


Nashville, TN, April 15, 2019 (WKRN ABC Channel 2)

A man who broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Bordeaux apartment Monday morning was shot by another man inside, authorities say.

Metro police responded around 12:30 a.m. to an apartment complex on Buena Vista Pike.

The woman living in the apartment called police and said Elvin Ewell, her ex-boyfriend, was outside, kicking the door and windows in an attempt to get inside.

While officers were enroute, the victim stated Ewell opened the living room window, climbed into the apartment and ran upstairs, where another man was hiding.

Ewell, 26, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated burglary and possession of a weapon during a dangerous felony.                                                                                      


Shasta County, California, April 11, 2019 (Action News Now)

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said a man shot his brother in the chest several times in self-defense on Wednesday. 

Around 9:09 p.m. on Wednesday, deputies responded to reports of a family disturbance at 21893 Squaw Grass Trail, in the Bella Vista area.

Deputies were notified that shots had been fired during the disturbance.

When they arrived, they found Joshua Snyder, 35, suffering from several gunshot wounds to his torso. He was transferred to a local hospital.

After interviewing family members at the scene, deputies learned that Joshua had brandished a pistol at his mother, Renee Young, earlier and fired one round. No family members were struck.

Joshua’s brother, Jeffrey Snyder, confronted Joshua in the garage of the home with a firearm.

Joshua pointed the gun at Jeffery and advanced toward him. Fearing for his life, deputies said that Jeffrey fired several rounds at Joshua, hitting him in the chest.

Joshua remains in a local hospital under critical condition.

Jeffrey was not arrested as deputies said it appears he was acting in self-defense.

An Alma woman will not be charged with murder after shooting and killing her boyfriend. Crawford County prosecutor Marc McCune says he found it was justified that Miranda Resinos shot and killed her boyfriend Kevin Gettridge.

“Today we are happy and feel the justice system worked,” says Carrie Jernigan, Resinos’ lawyer.

Residos’ defense team, Settle and Jernigan, PLLC says this was not a murder case but a fight to stay alive amid domestic violence.

“They have to make a split second decision on the night or day something happens. And while she was arrested that night, the investigation was just getting started. They conducted a very extensive and throughout the investigation,” says Jernigan.                                                                  


Baton Rouge, Louisiana, March 31, 2019 (The Advocate)

One person was injured in a shooting Sunday in which police say a man forced his way into his girlfriend’s home and attacked her.

Baton Rouge Police Department and Emergency Medical Services responded to the 1800 block of North Marque Ann Drive around 2 p.m. according to EMS spokesman Mike Chustz.

Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Sgt. L’Jean McKneely said Freddie Davidson, 34, forced his way into his girlfriend’s home and began assaulting her. Someone inside the apartment shot the man in the leg, McKneely said. It was not clear late Sunday whether the woman or someone else shot the intruder.


Indianapolis, Indiana, March 23, 2019 (WXIN Fox Channel 59)

A 30-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by a woman who claimed to be acting in self-defense.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Saturday in the 2700 block of Caroline Avenue, located on Indianapolis’s near northeast side.

Police said the incident is being investigated as a possible self-defense shooting, which stemmed from an alleged domestic dispute. The woman reportedly told police she was in fear for her life when she shot the man. She claims he had pointed a handgun at her during an argument, which prompted her to draw a gun of her own.


Casa Grande, Ariz, Feb 24, 2019 (KSAZ Fox Channel 10)

Casa Grande Police are investigating a homicide after a man was shot and killed Saturday night. 

Police responded to an apartment in the 900 block of North Colorado St to find Michael Watson, 33, with a gunshot wound. Watson was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Investigators believe Watson arrived at his estranged wife’s apartment where he confronted the woman’s boyfriend. Watson assaulted the man who fired a handgun, hitting Watson.


Los Angeles, Calif, Feb 17, 2019 (KABC Channel 17)

A man allegedly stabbed his mother and brother before being shot in the leg by his wounded sibling Saturday at a home in Highland Park, authorities said.

An LAPD spokesperson said the incident was reported about 3:18 p.m. at a two-story apartment building in the 600 block of North Avenue 65, where authorities arrived to find a grisly scene.

“We had four children, as officers were responding, they walked out of the hallway and they were covered in blood,” said police Sgt. Frank Preciado. The blood-spattered children, who were unharmed, had run into the apartment searching for relatives after hearing the gunfire.

According to investigators, a brother and sister had been inside the residence with their mother when an uninvited brother arrived and an altercation ensued. The uninvited man allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed his mother in the face before turning the weapon on his brother.

“That’s when the suspect is still holding onto the knife, the brother that was a victim, that was stabbed in the cheek or the face – somewhere in that area – retrieves a handgun, fires at his brother, wounding him in the leg,” Preciado said.


Evans, Ga, Feb 14, 2019 (WRDW CBS Channel 12)

A 42-year-old man is dead after deputies say his girlfriend was protecting herself and her teen son.

Billy Rogers was shot in the chest in a home on the 900 block of Hunting Horn Way around 2 a.m. That’s in Columbia County’s Bridlewood subdivision.

Officials with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office say it all started with an argument between Rogers and his girlfriend’s son. News 12 is told Rogers was using his hands, legs, and teeth as weapons against the 15-year-old boy.

The incident occurred at a home on County Road 298, which is also known as Garland Smith Road, around noon Monday.

Newman said that his deputies responded to a report of a disturbance with shots fire.

When JCSO deputies got to the scene, they learned that the boyfriend, who was later identified as Kenneth Brown, had the boy’s mother by the collar and was “throwing her around,” Newman said.

The sheriff said the boy told Brown to quit messing with his mother and fired several gunshots into the ground in an effort to protect her.

No charges will be filed against the boy, Newman said.


Chicago, IL, Jan 6, 2019 (Chicago Sun Times)

A man breaching an order of protection was killed inside a hallway late Saturday by an armed 52-year-old woman who turned a gun on him in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

At 11:44 p.m., the 52-year-old was notified that the security alarm at her home in the 1400 block of West 71st Street went off, according to Chicago police. She opened her front door on the second floor to investigate and encountered a 22-year-old man who had an active order of protection forbidding him to go near that address.

After an argument, she shot him in the left shoulder, police said. He was pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center at 12:10 a.m. Sunday.


Greenville, NC, Dec 27, 2018 (WNCT CBS Channel 9)

A 20-year-old Marine shot his father after protecting his mother during a domestic violence incident reported in Greenville on Christmas Eve, deputies said.

The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence located on Old River Road in Greenville in reference to a shooting reported on Christmas Eve around 6:00 p.m.

Deputies arrived on the scene and said they found a subject deceased.

According to an investigation, there was a domestic violence incident happening before the shooting.

The victim was shot three times by his 20-year-old son, Gejuan Chance, deputies said. The victim was identified as 44-year-old George T. Chance. Deputies said Gejuan, who is currently serving in the Marines, was protecting his mother.

Investigators believe a father who shot his son in Wayne County acted in self-defense.

According to District Attorney Brent Cooper, the incident happened around 2:20 p.m. The investigation began when 47-year-old Greg Bratcher called 911 and reported that he shot his 25-year-old son Jansen Bratcher.

Responding officers found Greg Bratcher attempting to give aid to his son. Investigators believe at this time that Greg Bratcher was acting in self-defense when he shot his son, and no charges are being filed at this time.


LAND O’ LAKES, Fla, Dec 20, 2018 (WPLG Channel 10)

A neighbor fatally shot a man accused of domestic violence against a woman shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday in Pasco County, deputies say.

A 51-year-old woman ran to call 911 after “a domestic violence incident” with 55-year-old William Rogers at their Belcher Lane home, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said she went to the home of neighbor Brian Scruggs, 50, but William followed her inside without permission.

“Brian Scruggs, the homeowner, confronted William and asked him to leave multiple times, at which point Brian defended himself by shooting William,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Benecia Holder wrote in an email.


Barren County, KY, Dec 19, 2018 (Glasgow Daily Times)

A Barren County grand jury declined this week to indict a woman who shot and killed her son-in-law on Nov. 30 at her home along Peters Creek Road. 

Mark Adam Bellamy, 29, of Park City was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities found him with a single gunshot wound. His mother-in-law, Tracy Wyatt, shot Bellamy following a family dispute at the residence, according to the Barren County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a news release from Commonwealth’s Attorney John Gardner, the case was presented to a Barren County grand jury Tuesday following a “thorough” investigation by the BCSO.

“The Grand Jury heard the evidence gathered in the case, and jurors were advised of the homicide laws; as well as the laws regarding self-defense, defense of others and defense of a residence,” the news release states.

She told police Kemp continued to assault her while she retrieved her gun.

Witnesses reported hearing a woman’s screams and gunshots, Watkins said.
