CPRC research discussed in Alabama Today

Alabama Today has a detailed discussion on concealed handgun permits in the state, noting that there are now about 470,000 permit holders in Alabama.  The news article relies heavily on our July report on concealed handgun permits around the country.

Unfortunately, there were some weaknesses in the piece.

— The six states that allow people to carry without a permit very likely have even higher rates of legal concealed carry than Alabama ( no permits are required in Arizona, Alaska, Arkansas, Montana (99.4% of the state), Wyoming, and Vermont).…

Illinois robbery rate has fallen by 20 percent since concealed handgun permits started being issued

Given the small percentage of Illinoisans who have obtained a concealed handgun permit, it is very doubtful that permitted concealed could have a significant impact on crime rates, though it might put criminals on notice and there were a few startling cases of self defense with permits in Illinois.  In one case in Chicago, a former soldier with a legal permit to carry stopped a gang from killing four people who had just left a party.

CPRC Debating Former NJ Gov. James Florio in the pages of the NJ Star-Ledger over limits on magazine size

After John Lott’s original piece in the NJ Star-Ledger defense of Governor Chris Christie’s veto of a 10 bullet limit on gun magazine size, Former Governor James Florio wrote a response.

An op-ed article that appeared Saturday, authored by John R. Lott Jr. and defending Gov. Chris Christie’s veto of a bill decreasing the size of gun magazines, is troubling.

CPRC in the Weekly Standard on the Federal District Court decision on concealed carry

Whitney Blake’s article in The Weekly Standard on Senior District Court Judge Fredrick Scullin Jr.’s decision on Saturday to let people carry concealed handguns in DC extensively quotes CPRC president John Lott.

The immediate implications are significant, according to John Lott, a preeminent gun law expert and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center.

Philly mother facing three years on gun charge, no intent to violated complicated gun laws

Fox News extensively quoted CPRC president John Lott about the tragic story of a young mother who ran afoul of New Jersey gun laws.  On October 1st, Shaneen Allen, 27, was stopped by police in New Jersey’s Atlantic County after making an unsafe lane change. Allen then volunteered that she had the .380 Bersa Thunder handgun, as well as a concealed carry permit for Pennsylvania, unaware that her permit was not transferable to The Garden State.
