According to research published by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), many studies have found that right-to-carry or concealed carry laws are associated with reductions in violent crime by increasing the potential risks faced by offenders. CPRC President John Lott dismissed the circular’s advice.
“It’s the same type of fear mongering that you see being brought up with regard to individual citizens defending themselves,” Lott told the DCNF. “With regard to civilians, you often see the claim in the media that people should behave passively when they’re confronted by a criminal, but that’s really a misreading of the evidence.”
Lott noted that when all forms of active resistance are compared to a passive response, the passive response is safer; however, passive responses poses far more risk for injury than using a firearm for personal defense.
“Women, for example, who behave passively are about 2.4 times more likely to end up being seriously injured. than a woman who has a gun,” Lott said. “Men who behave passively are about 1.4 times more likely to end up being seriously injured than a man who has a gun.” . . .
In a July 22 poll commissioned by the Crime Prevention Research Center, the number of people who reported carrying a concealed firearm went up from 24.3% in December 2024to 30.9%. In other words, more people are carrying concealed.
This is not surprising for two reasons: First, since Bruen, states like California, New York and New Jersey can’t deny a permit because someone didn’t prove “good cause” to carry a firearm. Second, we’re also seeing many states going to “constitutional carry” where no permit is needed at all.The result, if you believe the polling data, is that a would-be crook has a much larger chance of coming across an armed citizen when he is trying to commit his crimes. Armed citizens end up being far less understanding than a Soros prosecutor, and the result… well, we’ve seen the results in some recent news articles.
In other words, criminals are probably electing not to do things which might lead to an encounter with an armed citizen. So, it’s no wonder crime’s been dropping. . . .

The FBI makes the claim, but John Lott presents plenty of evidence the claim is not correct, that a large number of false positives are created, and the false positive have large racial biases. There is little, if any evidence more background checks would reduce the murder rate or the number of active mass murders. A bill has passed the House, and is pending before the Senate, to force the FBI to share NICS demographic data with the Congress. Currently, the FBI refuses to do so. . . .
Further, permit holders have proven themselves highly responsible. Examining permit-revocation data for his annual “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States” report, Dr. John Lott determined, “Even given the low conviction rate for police, concealed-carry permit holders are even more law-abiding than police.” . . .
