CPRC in the News: Daily Caller, El Tiempo (Colombia), Townhall, American Thinker, California’s Peace Officers Research Association, Ann Coulter’s Unsafe, and more

Research by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) showed that murders with illegally modified Glocks were rarer than fatal lightning strikes. By comparison, the National Weather Service confirmed 81 fatal lightning strikes since the start of 2021 and confirmed 40 fatal lightning strikes in 2016 alone.

“The total that we have so far found is 40 murders from 17 attacks where someone was murdered,” the CPRC article said, adding that while they attempted an “exhaustive search,” other killings were possible. . . .

Arming the “good guys” against the “bad guys”—within the bounds of the law—will improve the country’s security. Furthermore, studies conducted by John Lott over a 20-year period in the United States concluded that the greater the number of legally owned firearms among the citizenry, the lower the crime rate in society. According to Lott, the 29 states that permitted firearms saw significant reductions in murders, rapes, and aggravated assaults. Homicide rates, for instance, were 81% lower in areas where the carrying of firearms was permitted. Conversely, shifting from permission to prohibition led to increased crime: as a result of a ban, Washington went from having a homicide rate 28% above the national average to one 98% higher. . . .

Dr. John. R. Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center crimeresearch.org  notes that while Trans aren’t in any real danger, Americans are in disproportionate danger of murderous attack by trans.Lott found that trans comprise less than 1% of the population. He uses .73% in his data analysis.

From 2018 to 2024, they committed mass public attacks at a rate of 6.2 times their share of the population. That figure increased to more than 16 times in 2024. Most Americans know that the Nashville shooter was trans, despite media and government attempts to hide her trans ideology as a motive for that deadly attack. Here’s a short list of other trans killers, including the Uvalde killer, whose trans identity has been largely successfully hidden:

Lott has also reported well-hidden information deadly to every trans narrative:

As a final note, mass public shooters in particular are overwhelmingly suicidal. Given the high rates of suicide by transgender individuals, it isn’t too surprising that they may be overrepresented about mass public shooters. The Williams Institute reports that about 48% had seriously considered suicide in the past year, and ~10–12% had attempted suicide in the past year among transgender respondents. Compare with the general U.S. adult population: ~4.3% report suicidal thoughts in the past year and ~0.6% report a suicide attempt. If the survey data from the Williams Institute is accurate, the rate people were seriously thinking of suicide is about 12× higher among transgender adults compared to the general population and the attempt rate is roughly 18× higher. Not as much work has been done of the motives of active shooters, but presumably they are similar. . . .

The tilt is already documented. John Lott’s Crime Prevention Research Center ran twenty AI chatbots through sixteen questions on crime and gun control and found that most scored consistently liberal, with several — including Meta’s Llama-2 and Google’s Gemini — reaching the maximum liberal score. Only one chatbot Lott tested returned a response even close to neutral on gun control. The starting point Everytown is working from isn’t a level playing field. It’s a field that already tilts in their direction, and they want AI companies to tilt it further. . . .

So, what’s all the “new” news? Recent survey data conducted in partnership between the Crime Prevention Research Center and the well-respected polling firm The McLaughlin Group revealed Americans are significantly more likely to support and exercise their Second Amendment rights now than they were just 18 months ago. They are less likely to support increased gun control restrictions pushed by antigun activists.

The three main takeaways from the polling are simple and straightforward.

First, “Independent voters are more aligned with enforcement-focused crime policies than additional gun-control legislation,” the polling summary states. The data shows that more than 63% of survey respondents agreed that enforcing existing laws and arresting and prosecuting criminals would do the most to reduce crime, compared with less than 30% who thought passing additional gun control laws would help. . . .

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the Western States Sheriffs’ Association (“Sheriffs’ brief”) have submitted their brief and another has been jointly filed by the Peace Officers Research Association of California (the largest law enforcement organization in California and the largest statewide association nationally), the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, and Dr. John Lott’s well-known Crime Prevention Research Center (“Research brief”). . . .

Likewise, the Research brief amici note they:

share a common conviction that firearms regulation should focus on the misuse of firearms, disarming prohibited persons and those posing a physically-violent danger to themselves or others, confining violent offenders under gun-enhancement statutes, and securing the self-defense rights of the law-abiding, rather than furnishing a symbolic substitute that faults the arm for the consequences of [under- or mis-applied] lax enforcement.

California’s extreme version of the bans at issue furnishes an additional and more perfect illustration of their perverse and irrational nature. As the Research brief explains, a law enforcement officer may possess what is classified as an “assault weapon” only while employed for duty by a qualifying agency and only if the agency provides a discretionary certification for the gun; off-duty possession is limited to specific locations. Once employment ends due to retirement or otherwise, the former officer has 90 days in which to render the gun inoperable, sell it (only to a licensed dealer), or exile the gun out of state, even as the person and their family members remain potential targets for reprisal and “politically motivated retaliation” attacks. . . .

PORAC has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down bans on the semiautomatic rifles its members carry on duty and are required to surrender when they retire. On September 4, PORAC, joined by the California Association of Highway Patrolmen (CAHP) and the Crime Prevention Research Center, filed an amicus brief in Viramontes v. Cook County, No. 25-238, supporting the petitioners’ challenge to Cook County’s rifle ordinance and Illinois’s Protect Illinois Communities Act. Those laws employ the same feature-based method as California’s assault weapon statutes, and the rule the court announces will determine whether a California officer may retain, after leaving public service, the commonly owned rifle he or she lawfully carried while employed. . . .

Some let any lawful gun owner keep a loaded handgun in a private vehicle under a traveling or peaceable journey provision, while others require a carry permit for a loaded firearm in the cab at all. For example, Texas generally allows lawful gun owners to carry in a vehicle, while California requires a permit to carry a loaded firearm in one. Roughly 21.46 million Americans held concealed carry permits in 2024, per the Crime Prevention Research Center, yet a permit still only travels as far as each state’s reciprocity rules allow. . . .
