With a growing number of Democrats supporting abolishing prisons and borders as well as giving amnesty to all illegal aliens, a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey of likely U.S. voters, conducted July 28–30, 2026, found that only 19% support the Democratic Socialists of America’s proposal to abolish prisons “as part of a long-term program.” By contrast, 74% oppose abolishing prisons, including 57% who strongly oppose the proposal.
Even groups that are generally more supportive of progressive policies reject the idea. Liberals oppose it by a 71% to 20% margin, and Democrats oppose it by 66% to 25%. Every major demographic group—including every racial group, age group, sex, income level, and education level—also opposes abolishing prisons.
Only 27% of voters support abolishing borders and granting amnesty to everyone currently in the United States illegally, while 65% oppose the proposal, including 50% who strongly oppose it.
Although voters reject abolishing borders less overwhelmingly than they reject abolishing prisons, every major demographic group still opposes the policy. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, opposition narrows to 47% versus 43% in support. Hispanics are also less opposed to abolishing borders than to abolishing prisons, but they still reject the proposal by a 62% to 32% margin.
Usually in these surveys those with the most education tend to be more liberal on law enforcement issues, but here they are the most conservative group, with opposition to both of these policies increasing with the level of income.
The survey also asked likely voters about defunding the Pentagon, and people still opposed that by 63%-to-23%, which is a similar gap to their opposition to abolishing borders and giving amnesty to everyone.
