Even in Montana, Democratic Congressional Nominee has long history supporting strict gun control

Jun 7, 2026 | Gun Control Advocates

Ryan Busse, the Democratic nominee for Montana’s 1st Congressional District, has repeatedly supported assault weapon and magazine bans. He testified as an expert witness in four separate cases defending such restrictions: California’s assault weapon ban in 2022; Highland Park, Illinois’s assault weapon and large-capacity magazine ban in 2023; Massachusetts’s assault weapon and large-capacity magazine ban in 2023; and Illinois’s assault weapon and large-capacity magazine ban in 2023. Busse also served as a senior advisor to the Giffords gun-control organization.

While Busse claims that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment, given his role as an expert witness in four cases defending gun and magazine bans—including three as recently as 2023—it is difficult to reconcile that record with supporting the Second Amendment..

In the Illinois case, Busse supported a ban on any magazine that could hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. He also supported the ban of AR-15 and its derivatives, the most popular rifle in the United States.

Among the other gun control laws he has supported, includes:

Red Flag laws

Mandated storage laws

Background checks on the private transfer of guns (something that would be particularly difficult in rural Montana were FFLs may be a long ways away from people who want to transfer a gun)

On other issues, Busse is highly critical of ICE and deportation actions of the Trump administration: “Don’t let them tell you this ICE insanity is about law enforcement. This is an intimidation campaign meant to divide the country. We need a Congress that stands up and holds them accountable.”
