Asheville, North Carolina, June 1, 2025 (Asheville Citizen Times)
After gunfire erupted on Rankin Avenue near College Street around 12:07 a.m. June 1, Asheville Police Department detectives reviewed a “significant amount of physical and digital evidence” and conducted “an extensive series of interviews” with victims and witnesses, the department said in a June 4 news release. After consulting with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, officials determined not to press charges, the release said…
The incident began when the “bouncer” of a local night club saw two men, one identified as Porras, 26, “harassing a group of women,” according to releases from both APD and the district attorney’s office. When the security guard denied the men entry into the club, Porras’ friend argued with the guard, which escalated to a physical altercation.
A club patron intervened to help the security guard and attempt to deescalate the situation, the news release said. The altercation continued and witnesses heard Porras say he was going to retrieve a gun from his car before he left the scene.
Moments later, Porras returned “with a gun in his hand,” APD’s release said. After a “scuffle” with Porras, the patron drew a firearm and both he and Porras began shooting at each other. When officers arrived, they found Porras dead in the roadway…
The patron who fired the shots left the scene but later turned himself in to police. APD’s release said he has “cooperated in all facets of the investigation.”
After reviewing the evidence and North Carolina law, prosecutors in the District Attorney’s Office, alongside APD investigators, determined the patron’s actions were legally justified in self-defense.
“The evidence indicates that the patron was not the aggressor and acted to defend himself during a rapidly escalating and dangerous situation,” APD’s release says…

Marietta police are hailing a man as a hero after he helped stop two carjackings on Monday.

According to video evidence and witness testimony, Riley attacked a woman when she returned to her Chevrolet Aveo at the gas pump, officers said. The two fought for the keys, a struggle that turned “very physical,” according to police.
Officers said Edwards noticed and ran from across the street to help. When Riley was confronted, he ran away and allegedly tried to carjack a Toyota RAV4 stopped at a red light in the nearby intersection. Two adults and their 2-year-old child were inside the car, police said.
But the suspect’s plan was foiled when Edwards followed and held his gun up, freezing Riley in place until police arrived, according to officers…
