Dr. Lott, though, has the big picture with regard to crime and the costs of not only the crimes committed but of illegal immigration in general.

Like the member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua sentenced to life in prison last weekfor the murder of Laken Riley in Georgia, Hernandez’s case is shining a light on the federal government’s failure to properly vet and keep track of lawless migrants.

These gaps have led to broad claims that illegal immigrants have less involvement with the criminal justice system than native-born Americans. A review of the available data, however, shows that the criminal records of millions of migrants – the ones President-elect Trump vows to prioritize for deportation – remain unknown due to illegal crossings, lax enforcement, and lax data collection by federal and “sanctuary” jurisdictions.

In addition, an analysis of the available statistics by RealClearInvestigations suggests that the crime rate of noncitizens is vastly understated. A separate RCI analysis based on estimates developed by the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ) suggests that crime by illegal aliens who entered the U.S. by July 21, 2024 cost the country some $166.5 billion. These criminals disproportionately entered the U.S. during the Biden administration.

Note that last sentence: “These criminals disproportionately entered the U.S. during the Biden administration.” That’s because the Biden administration ignored the law and allowed any semblance of control of the border to collapse. The responsibility for the deaths of Rachel Morin and Laken Riley, among others, is partly on their heads. . . . [long quotes from Lott’s piece at Real Clear Investigations]

Now, new reports and legislative efforts at the state and federal levels reveal the true and darker reality about crime in America: Murders and other violent crimes have risen.

According to a report by John R. Lott Jr. of Real Clear Investigations, the FBI did what he referred to as a “stealth revision” of the figures in the Uniform Crime Report Summary of Crime in the Nationreleased September 2024. Lott says in his report that revised statistics show a sharp rise in the 2022 numbers.

“When the FBI originally released the ‘final’ crime data for 2022 in September 2023, it reported that the nation’s violent crime rate fell by 2.1 percent. This quickly became a Democratic Party talking point to counter Donald Trump’s claims of soaring crime. But the FBI has quietly revised those numbers, releasing new data that shows violent crime increased in 2022 by 4.5 percent. The new data includes thousands more murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults.”

Only a footnote at the bottom of page three of the FBI summary states: “The 2022 violent crime rate has been updated for inclusion in CIUS, 2023.”

That runs counter to the now questionable narrative pushed by major media outlets, as well as then-presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, in an official September 23 White House press release.

“Today’s new data submitted to the FBI confirms that our dedicated efforts and collaborative partnerships with law enforcement are working; Americans are safer now than when we took office,” she said. “Last year, we saw the largest ever one-year decrease in the homicide rate, which now stands 16 percent below its 2020 level. Violent crime is at a near 50-year low.” . . .

On Nov. 21, 2020, the Crime Prevention Research Center stated, “There were 2.7 million concealed handgun permit holders in 1999, 4.6 million in 2007, 8 million in 2011, 11.1 million in 2014, and now 19.48 million in 2020,” however, “[s]ixteen states have adopted constitutional carry for their entire state, meaning that a permit is no longer required. Because of these constitutional carry states, the nationwide growth in permits does not paint a full picture of the overall increase in concealed carry.” . . .

The cost of crime from 662,000 criminal illegal migrants sought for deportation has been pegged at three times the much-hyped price of President-elect Donald Trump’s “mass deportation” plan.

In an analysis from the Crime Prevention Research Center, the costs of crime from the top targets of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations was set at $166.5 billion. That number is based on the cost to victims, a price list developed by the National Institute of Justice.

Crime Prevention Research Center President John R. Lott Jr., who did the analysis for Real Clear Investigations, said the cost was based on just one of the crimes “each of the 662,566 ‘non-detained’ noncitizen offenders on ICE’s list” has been previously accused of.

“Murders account for almost $153.8 billion of the $166.5 billion in estimated criminal victimization costs. Another $6 billion involves sexual assaults/offenses, and an additional $5.2 billion comes from sexual assaults and sexual offenses,” he wrote. . . .

After a draft decision in the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court case, which overturned Roe v. Wade, was leaked, violence against the pro-life movement skyrocketed. A 2022 study from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) found there were 22 times as many attacks against pro-life organizations as pro-abortion organizations. . . .

Thank you, Crime Prevention Research CenterJohn R. Lott Jr, and RealClearInvestigations. But what took you so long? . . .

Finally, over at RealClearInvestigations, this weaponized nonsense has been decisively debunked. Read the whole report from John Lott, President of the Crime Prevention Research Center, but the conclusion is summarized by this:

“A review of the available data…shows that the criminal records of millions of migrants – the ones President-elect Trump vows to prioritize for deportation – remain unknown due to illegal crossings, lax enforcement, and lax data collection by federal and “sanctuary” jurisdictions.  In addition, an analysis of the available statistics…suggests that the crime rate of noncitizens is vastly understated. In October, Dr. John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) broke the news that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had stealth-revised its reported violent crime data for 2022 to show a 4.5% increase, rather than the originally reported 2.1% decrease, for that year. Among other things, that adjustment added 1,699 more murders for 2022. Given that the vast majority of murder crimes are reported, Lott asks, “How do you miss 1,699 murders?” . . .

TTAG, “Biden’s FBI Reportedly Altering Murder Data to Suit Gun Violence Narrative,” The Truth About Guns, November 27, 2024.

Biden launched the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention last year to coordinate federal efforts for a more holistic approach to the issue. While the office doesn’t make gun laws, or even enforce them, it serves as a clearinghouse for the administration’s messaging and policymaking on gun violence. . . .

Should Trump decide to keep the office, it would be at his whim—possibly refashioned as a repository for pro-gun policies or, as some gun rights advocates have suggested, an outfit to push Second Amendment expansion.

“The obvious choice is for the Trump administration to completely dismantle it,” said Devin Hughes, founder of the gun violence research outfit GVPedia.

“More likely, however, they will use the office as a platform to spread disinformation on gun violence that is favorable to the gun lobby, with someone like John Lott at its head,” Hughes said, referencing the debunked economist and Trump administration alum whose skewed crime statistics are touted by Republican lawmakers and the gun lobby. . . .

Given that the vast majority of murder crimes are reported, Lott asks, “How do you miss 1,699 murders?” . . .

The FBI has not been open about the need for these changes, or even, it seems, the fact that they were being made. JFD reports that it has unsuccessfully sought the reasons for the revisions using a Freedom of Information Act request filed with the FBI almost six months ago, and through a more recent email to the FBI’s National Press Office. In another instance of less than optimal transparency, an op-ed by Dr. John Lott earlier this fall discussed how the FBI missed or misidentified many cases of defensive gun use and refused to correct its data even after “the blatant omissions” had been pointed out. “The FBI dataset is missing so many defensive gun uses that it’s hard to believe it isn’t intentional and the fact that they never correct mistakes that are brought to their attention is even more damning.” . . .
