San Mateo, California, August 2, 2024 (KRON4)

At about 8 a.m., police received calls of a disturbance from a “frantic” caller reporting a subject had crashed into his car and that the suspect was shot.

After a few minutes, responding officers arrived near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Grant Street and found both the suspect and the victim at the scene.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had driven to the victim with a U-Haul box truck, and a verbal argument ensued.

Police said the suspect then drove back to the U-Haul, grabbed a metal pipe, and started attacking the victim. Police said the victim was hit several times and sustained damage to both his head and arms.

After getting hit with the metal pipe several times, police said the victim pulled out a .22 caliber pistol and shot the suspect. The wounded suspect then drove back to the U-Haul, put the truck in reverse, and drove at the victim.

Police said the suspect “almost” ran the victim over and instead drove into the victim’s car before he fled the scene. SMPD said the suspect was later located at a Palo Alto hospital and is expected to survive.

The victim was also hospitalized from the metal pipe injuries and has since been released, police said.
