Wyoming moves to get rid of gun-free zones at schools and government buildings

We have often pointed out the dangers of gun-free zones (see also here and here). Since teacher unions control most school boards, allowing individual school districts to set up the regulations will mean that few school districts will allow teachers or staff to protect the students.

The bill allows for concealed carry at any meeting of a governmental entity, meeting of the legislature or legislative committee, any public elementary or secondary school facility and any public college or university facility. . .

An amendment to the bill added a provision that excludes school athletic events where alcohol is being sold. The bill also does not apply to licensed health and human services facilities.

The bill additionally states that no enrolled students in an elementary or secondary school are allowed to carry a concealed weapon.

The board of trustees in each school district may adopt rules and regulations to govern employees concealed carrying in district facilities. . . .

On Tuesday evening, the Senate brought the bill. After more than an hour of discussion, Senate amendments to the bill were withdrawn and the bill passed with a simple majority.

The Senate will need to hold a second and third reading of the bill prior to it being signed by the Senate President Driskill and Speaker of the House Albert Sommers, R-Pinedale, and reaching the Gov. Mark Gordon’s desk.
