Latest NBC Survey Shows 52% of American Households Own a Gun

Nov 24, 2023 | Survey

In the ten years from February 2013 to November 2023, the household gun ownership rate has grown from 42% to 52%. It is a six percentage point increase since 2019. Republicans and Democrats have seen the same 11 percentage point increase, though gun ownership has fallen among Independents.

.

While white gun ownership has increased by three percentage points between 2019 and 2023, the gun ownership rate for blacks has soared by 17 percentage points from 24% to 41%.

.

The survey also asked people’s views on gun control, and Americans were very divided, with 48% saying that the government “will not do enough to regulate access to firearms” and 47% that restrictions “will go too far in restricting gun rights.”

(Unfortunately, we haven’t found the breakdown with all the survey results.)

.

More than half of American voters — 52% — say they or someone in their household owns a gun, per the latest NBC News national poll.

.

That’s the highest share of voters who say that they or someone in their household owns a gun in the history of the NBC News poll, on a question dating back to 1999.

.

In 2019, 46% of Americans said that they or someone in their household owned a gun, per an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. And in February 2013, that share was 42%.

.

“In the last ten years, we’ve grown [10 points] in gun ownership. That’s a very stunning number,” said Micah Roberts of Public Opinion Strategies, a Republican polling firm that co-conducted the poll with members of the Democratic polling firm Hart Research. . . .
