Recent Mass Public Shootings in Serbia (two in two days), Germany, and Portugal

Eight were murdered and 14 injured in an attack at a village in Serbia, at least nine people were murdered and seven others injured in an attack at a school in Serbia, six people were murdered at a church in Germany, and three others were murdered at a pigeon race in Portugal. Note with only 6.9 million people living in Serbia, the US has a population that is over 48 times greater, but the US has had a total of 10 mass public school shootings since 2000. Those two shootings in Serbia would be as if the United States had 96 on a per capita rate.

A man has been arrested after eight died and 14 were injured in Serbia’s second mass shooting in a week.

The attack occurred shortly after midnight near a village some 60km (37 miles) south of Belgrade when the shooter opened fire from a moving car. . . .

A seventh-grade student armed with pistols and Molotov cocktails ​shot and killed eight children and a security guard on Wednesday in an attack against his school in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, . . .

The shooting took place around 8:40 a.m. at Vladislav Ribnikar primary school, in Vracar, an upscale neighborhood, Chief Veselin Milic of the Belgrade police, said at a news conference. The student fatally shot seven girls and one boy using two handguns, which he took from his father. He also carried four self-made Molotov cocktails, Chief Milic said.

Six children and a teacher were also injured in the attack. One of the children, a 13-year-old, was described as having “life-threatening injuries,” officials said. . . .

A man fatally shot three people before turning his gun on himself, Portuguese police said Sunday, in what local media described as a dispute among rival pigeon racers.…

The four dead individuals were participating in a pigeon race, Portuguese media reported from the scene, and their disagreement also centered on an illegal vegetable garden. . . .

A number of people have been killed in a shooting at a church in Hamburg, Germany, police say.

The shooting took place on Deelböge street in the Gross Borstel district. Local media identified the location as a Jehovah’s Witness centre.

Police say a gunman is believed to be dead. It is unclear if the attacker is among six or seven fatalities reported by German media.

As yet, “there is no reliable information on the motive”, police say.

A police spokesman said investigators had “indications that a perpetrator may have been in the building and may be even among the dead”. “We have no indications of a perpetrator on the run,” he said.

“The officers themselves also heard a shot coming from the upper floors of the building,” the spokesman added. “They went upstairs and also found a body there.” . . .
