Illinois Supreme Court halts plans to eliminate cash bail and other pretrial court hearing changes

On January 1st, 2023, Illinois was scheduled to implement the SAFE-T Act, a radical piece of legislation that barely passed the state legislature, with many Democrats voting against it. A county judge declared the law unconstitutional, but his ruling only applied to some counties. Right before the law was to take effect, the Illinois State Supreme Court stepped in a put the law on hold until a hearing before the court could make a decision.
