On Houston’s Giant 50,000-watt KTRH: Defensive Gun Use Four Times More Common Than Gun Crime

Oct 1, 2022 | Radio

You won’t hear Lester Holt report this: “New data shows defensive gun use is four times more common than violent gun crime.”

John R. Lott, founder and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, says that’s because legacy media goes out of their way to underreport anytime a good guy with a gun takes out a bad guy.

“They described the shooting at a church near Fort Worth in December of 2019 as security guards, when in fact they were just regular parishioners who had done it. So they didn’t want to count that as civilians stopping a mass public shooting.”

Contrary to what’s reported, Lott says just eight percent of all violent crime involves a gun. A national firearm survey found 81 million Americans own a firearm, with a third saying they’ve used it for protection.

Last weekend, a 17-year-old in Channelview, Texas shot and killed two home intruders with a shotgun to protect his family.

“I can give you lots of cases where young people, from like 9-years of age on up, have used their guns to protect themselves and family members. But you won’t see those types of stories.”

Lott says the focus should be on deterring gun crime, rather than taking away our right to protect ourselves.

“I was able to find out within less than a few minutes the Uvalde school was a place that banned guns. These are very easy things to find out, but you will not find the media mentioning that in their discussions.”
