NYPD finally adopts concealed handgun permit rules to get in step with the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision: Hint, it will be hard to obtain, you will wait a long time to get it, and you can’t really use it anywhere

Aug 25, 2022 | Concealed Handgun Permits

The fees to get a concealed handgun permit in New York City will still be extremely high. We went on their website on Wednesday, August 24th, after they had issued their new concealed handgun regulations, and the fee for handgun licenses is still $340 for the initial license, though the New York Daily News claims that despite what is shown on the NYPD website, the fee will be waived for those renewing their licenses. Since New York City’s permits are only valid for three years, not the typical five years in most states, this will be one of the highest yearly permit fees in the country. They are also now required to get 15 hours of training. Not surprisingly, New York City is taking the “good moral character” requirement to the extreme, with people having to get four character references, show their social media accounts, and sit for an in-person interview with the police. We are also being told that those previously denied getting a permit will have to reapply, but the process could take years. As the New York Daily News states, carrying a concealed handgun will be banned “in nearly every public place in the city.” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) has also said that “talking to a would-be gun buyer’s ‘neighbors online’ is now part of a background check.”

bans guns in broadly-defined “sensitive locations” that essentially make possessing a firearm illegal in nearly every public place in the city. . . .

The NYPD likely won’t approve the re-applications for months or years, given that the department is already backlogged with requests and is expected to receive a flood of new applications, Levine said. . . .

Applicants will have to include four character references and a list of social media accounts they have used in the last three years. They will also have to sit for an in-person interview and undergo a firearms safety course. . . .
