Add Georgia to the list of states (Alabama, Ohio, and Florida) that seem likely to adopt Constitutional Carry this year

Jan 5, 2022 | Gun Control Laws

With Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp facing a stiff primary challenge from former U.S. Senator David Perdue, and both Perdue and now Kemp endorsing Constitutional Carry the odds of legislation quickly passing in Georgia has increased dramatically. Because of the May primary Kemp has announced that passing Constitutional Carry before May.

Gov. Brian Kemp formally endorsed legislation to expand Georgians’ rights to carry firearms, putting a divisive effort to loosen gun restrictions at the top of his agenda amid a bruising reelection campaign.

The Republican announced his plan Wednesday to allow more Georgians to carry concealed weapons without a state permit, framing the initiative as the fulfillment of a pledge he made during his 2018 run for governor.

“In the face of rising violent crime across the country, law-abiding citizens should have their constitutional rights protected — not undermined,” he said in a speech at Adventure Outdoors, a massive gun range and firearms store in Smyrna. . . .

even some prominent Democrats supported the legislation at the time, nodding to surveys that indicated many Georgians once backed a new expansion. . . .

Greg Bluestein, “Kemp sets the stage for a new Georgia fight over gun rights,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, January 5, 2021.

With Governor Ron DeSantis endorsing Constitutional Carry, Ohio’s state Senate and House already passing similar bills, and Alabama on track to pass a bill by State Representative Shane Stringer, there is a reasonable chance there will be at least 25 Constitutional Carry states by mid-year.
