John Lott Jr., President of the Crime Prevention Research Center, pointed out the partisan divide in the poll and said it is unlikely Democrats will rethink their position on guns.

“While America has the most strongly gun control advocating president in our history, pushing regulations driving gun makers and gun sellers out of business, support for more gun control has fallen by 15 percentage points in just five years,” Lott said. “Yet, it seems unlikely that Democrats will rethink their support for more regulations. The partisan divide on this issue has never been so large — 91% of Democrats and only 24% of Republicans support stricter laws.” . . .

New York’s lawyers ought to be aware of the data showing that concealed-carry license holders are extremely unlikely to commit crimes.  Data from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), for example, indicates that while police commit firearms violations at a rate of 16.5 per 100,000 officers, the rate for permit holders in Florida and Texas is just 1.4 per 100,000, with similar data in other states. Regardless of the precise comparison with the police, permit revocation statistics make clear that carry license holders are overwhelmingly law-abiding. . . .

Steube further explained his opposition to the red flag legislation by pointing to a 2018 study by the Crime Prevention Research Center’s John Lott and William and Mary’s Carlisle E. Moody.

According to the study, “Red flag laws had no significant effect on murder, suicide, the number of people killed in mass public shootings, robbery, aggravated assault, or burglary. There is some evidence that rape rates rise. These laws apparently do not save lives.”

The connection between responsible gun ownership and low crime is nothing new. John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime, said criminals are deterred when more law-abiding people are armed.

“Criminals are deterred by higher penalties. Just as higher arrest and conviction rates deter crime, so does the risk that someone committing a crime will confront someone able to defend him or herself,” Lott said during an interview with the University of Chicago Press.

While some scholars dispute Lott’s findings, his theory appears to be working in the Granite State. . . .

Americans know that guns take many innocent lives every year, but many don’t know that firearms also save them.

On May 15, an attacker at an apartment complex in Fort Smith, Ark., fatally shot a woman and then fired 93 rounds at other people before a man killed him with a bolt-action rifle. Police said he “likely saved a number of lives in the process.”

On June 30, a 12-year-old Louisiana boy used a hunting rifle to stop an armed burglar who was threatening his mother’s life during a home invasion.

On July 4, a Chicago gunman shot into a crowd of people, killing one and wounding two others before a concealed-handgun permit holder shot and wounded the attacker. Police praised him for stepping in.

These are just a few of the nearly 1,000 instances reported by the media so far this year in which gun owners have stopped mass shootings and other murderous acts, saving countless lives. And crime experts say such high-profile cases represent only a small fraction of the instances in which guns are used defensively.

As John R. Lott wrote in 2005, at the time of Nichols’s escape, affirmative action (now rejoicing under the name “diversity”) has made life generally more dangerous for police. . . . .

A study released this month found that the number of concealed carry permits has increased almost 50 percent since 2016, reaching an all-time high.

The 75-page report, by Dr. John R. Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center, Carlisle E. Moody, Research Director and Professor at the College of William & Mary; and research associate Rujun Wang, was released on Oct. 11. It found that no less than 21.52 million people had active carry permits, averaging out to about 8.3 percent of the adults in the general population.

This percentage shifted greatly among states, for instance, with Alabama having 32 percent of adults with permits while some restrictive “may issue” states like California, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, and Rhode Island all had abysmal rates of less than one percent with permits.

“If the Supreme Court strikes down the ‘proper cause’ requirement in the eight May Issue states, we estimate that there could be at least 2.3 million more concealed handgun permits,” notes the report. “The eight states with that rule have issued permits to only 1.24 percent of their adult population compared to 10.77 percent for the other states.”

Six states – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas – have over a million permit holders. The Sunshine State had the greatest number of permits in the country, topping 2.5 million, while Hawaii had the least, with zero (0).  . . .

It should be no wonder why so many citizens have bought firearms—millions for the first time in their lives—and why the number of active concealed carry permits and licenses has skyrocketed to more than 21.5 million according to the annual report from the Crime Prevention Research Center.

According to John Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, “Multiple surveys done of criminals find that virtually no criminals obtain their guns from gun shows. In 1991 and 1997, only 0.6% and 0.7% of criminals obtained guns from gun shows. [A] 2016 survey conducted during the Obama administration found that number was still only 0.8%.”
