As a newly retired Deputy US Marshal, I’ve spent the last 30 years studying crime and gun violence and I agree that lax policy and soft punishments promote illegal ownership and gun crime.
Legal gun owners have never been the problem.

As a newly retired Deputy US Marshal, I’ve spent the last 30 years studying crime and gun violence and Ive been pondering the problem for a long time. I agree that lax policy… gun free zones, discretionary concealed carry laws and soft punishments promote illegal ownership and gun crime. Felons carry even though they are legally prohibited buyers because they can, and there’s almost no real effective downside to doing so.
As a FED LEO, I’ve carried concealed for the past nearly 30 years and, after researching the issues during my college days, I’ve always promoted gun ownership and legal concealed carry as THE solution to crime.
Every law abiding American (and person world wide) should be able to own and also to carry concealed. Though there is some exception, in general, legal gun owners, users and carriers have never been the problem with gun crime. Criminal actors, criminal people, criminals, are the problem that needs to be addressed and lax (and non-existent) criminal gun use mandatory minimum penalties is the problem.
There’s not enough potential punishment for criminal use of a weapon during a criminal act. If every criminal use of a weapon in furtherance of a crime met with a decisive and severe non-discretionary punishment, criminals would stop using guns in furtherance of their crimes.
Liberal lawmakers, prosecutors and judges that give criminals a “pass” to get out and commit more (revolving door) crimes after having had the chance to reform that criminal through a very lengthy non-parole nor early release sentence, are creating the criminal gun use problem
Perhaps promoting a change in focus of the national media dialogue from “gun crime” that focuses on the weapon… implicitly implying that all weapons are inherently bad and so should be banned, to focus on the “criminal gun users” and focus on the real problem, the criminal PERSON that uses a weapon illegally in furtherance of a criminal act.
Most Criminals are inherently gamblers, who thrive on the thrill of possibly getting caught. When criminals see the risk to benefit ratio as too risky, when potential penalties as too high to risk it, gun crime goes down. This is plainly seen statistically after a city or town promotes gun ownership and carry for general citizens. Crime rates drop because criminals go somewhere else lass risky. At least – that’s been my experience. Sorry for the rant. You know all this.
