Michael Bloomberg is giving strong signals he will run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 at age 78. Bloomberg is getting a lot of IOUs from Democrats. He is putting $80 million this year to help Democrats take control of Congress. He is putting tens of millions to help Democrats take state legislatures and governors.
What people might not realize is that Bloomberg’s Everytown and Moms Demand Action as a stalking horse for his presidential ambitions: as a way for Bloomberg to put together lists of potential supporters and campaign workers across the country. With over $51 billion in assets, these expenditures have been just a drop in the bucket for Bloomberg.
Just remember that when Bloomberg first ran for mayor of New York City, he spent $174 per vote and just eked out a win.
How much money will Bloomberg spend on races?
Just take how much Bloomberg is spending on one race in Georgia. In a Democratic runoff in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District between two Democrats with very similar views on gun control, Bloomberg has so far put in over $800,000 for the candidate who used to work for his gun control organization.
More than 95 percent of that outside money, upwards of $832,000, has come from Everytown, which has sponsored advertisements on behalf of McBath, a onetime spokeswoman for the group who lost her son to gun violence.
