Seven defensive gun uses in public over seven days

As usual, these cases exclude ones where a store owner or a home owner uses a gun on their own property to defend themselves.  There are so many of those reported in the news.  What we aim for here are cases where people who are legally carrying in public use a gun to defend themselves or others.

, , , The parking lot across from the Seminole City Center mall on 113th Street was characteristically busy on Sunday afternoon. . . .

Lynd said she screamed, honked, kicked and punched him. Sometime while they struggled, the robber pulled a 4-inch pocket knife and stabbed her three times — twice in the left leg and once in the abdomen, she said. . . .

Instead, three good Samaritans put their lives at risk, running toward an unknown danger to help a stranger. None knew their Sunday afternoon would include getting stabbed, wrestling a criminal to the ground after a wild foot chase or holding the man at gunpoint until police arrived. . . .

The St. Petersburg man has a lengthy criminal past, including felony convictions for cocaine, robbery and grand theft auto. Since his first trip to prison in 1989, he has spent more than a third of his life behind bars in seven trips. . . .

Without the help of these strangers, Lynd said she feared Watson may have hurt her more. . . .

When he flew down from Pennsylvania, Rush was expecting a weekend of beaches, fishing and good food — not to be holding a criminal at gunpoint.

While McMann was helping Lynd, Rush reached for his friend’s purse. He knew she had a concealed carry permit. He grabbed the gun and dashed across 113th Street.

When he caught up, Jones was already wrestling the man on the ground. Rush said the man had a knife in his extended right hand while Jones was on top of him. He yelled at him to drop it as he pointed the gun at him. He dropped the knife, he said.

Police arrived a few minutes later . . . .

Boardman, Ohio, WKBN Channel 27, August 10, 2017

The man — a CCW holder — reported that he spotted two suspects going through his neighbor’s car on Devonshire Drive just before 2 a.m. Thursday. He then grabbed his gun and ordered them to get on the ground until officers arrived.

According to a police report, one of the suspects managed to run away when the man yelled for his girlfriend to call the police.

The other suspect — a 17-year-old boy — was arrested when officers arrived. He admitted that he and his friend, who he refused to name, were breaking into cars in the area, according to the report. . . .

. . . At 5:18 a.m., the two were in the 6900 block of West 65th Street when the man, 33, hit the woman, 30, police said. The woman took out out a gun and shot the man, hitting him three times.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. He was identified as Damien Hernandez, of the 5900 block of West 65th Street, in Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. . . .

The woman was taken into custody after the shooting, police said, but she was released without being charged.

Omaha, Nebraska, Omaha World Herald, August 12, 2017

The woman was able to get away, Fabian said, but Evans came after her again, hitting her in the back and arm with a pipe and saying he was going to kill her and the other women who were there.

One of the other women had a firearm and told Evans to stop and back away, Fabian said. Evans said, “Go ahead and shoot me,” and continued swinging the pipe, the prosecutor said.

The woman fired the gun, hitting Evans in the lower abdomen, Fabian said.

Evans . . . was treated for the gunshot wound. He was in a wheelchair for his Friday court appearance.

Evans’ ex-girlfriend suffered a broken arm and bruising.

Fabian said Evans has a felony conviction for attempted delivery of a controlled substance and has several convictions of misdemeanor assault.

Seminole, Florida, IONTB.com, August 6, 2017

According to deputies, the victim 44-year-old Rosanna Lynd of Seminole was sitting in her vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Highlander, in the parking lot of the Publix. The suspect 49-year-old Bobby Martin Watson approached Lynd while she was sitting in her vehicle.  He opened the door reaching over the victim and grabbed her purse.

Lynd began to struggle with Watson who stabbed her one time in the abdomen and one time in the left thigh. A Good Samaritan, 44-year-old Christopher McMann of St. Petersburg, observed the struggle, came to Lynd’s aid, and was subsequently stabbed one time in the upper back by Watson.

Deputies say Watson then fled toward Seminole City Shopping Center with McMann and another Good Samaritan, 31 year-old Travis Jones of Seminole, pursuing him eastbound across 113th Street. A third Good Samaritan, Donald Rush of Washington, PA, who observed the altercation retrieved a hand gun from his vehicle and joined in the foot pursuit of Watson. . . .

Donald Rush was able to disarm Watson by holding him at gun point until deputies arrived and took Watson into custody. . . .
