Crime Prevention Research Center’s work mentioned on ABC’s The View

Jedediah Bila on ABC’s The View:

I’m not a gun owner. I spend a lot of time with gun owners and spent a lot of time in Texas. When you study these shootings, what you find out is a lot of the lunatics, these maniacs target gun-free zones. The Aurora shooter, who went in and shot up that movie theater, that Batman movie, he went and specifically went out of region because all of the theaters around him closest to him, people were allowed to carry — they were conceal-carry. They were allowed to have their firearm. He went to a theater that had a sign out front that declared it was a gun-free zone. You see it all the time. I mean there’s stats upon stats. The Crime Prevention Research Center, came up with a stat, that over 98% of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones. So I want those students who have a license to carry, who have gone through the process, who have been approved to not be sitting ducks in those classes.

The entire segment has some real problems with the claims made by the other hosts.

— As to the other hosts’ concerns about permit holders accidentally shooting others, here is a list of cases where permit holders have stopped what otherwise would have been mass public shootings. In none of these cases did a permit holder accidentally shot a bystander.  Indeed, while that possibility might happen, we have never found a case where it has.
— Regarding the FBI report produced by the Obama administration that Joy Behar cited on the show is a very politicized study. It misses the cases provided in the previous link.  There are also other big errors in the study.
— Finally, note that it has been a year since Texas enacted its concealed handgun law for four-year public colleges and the concerns that people had then haven’t been born out.  See here for a list of problems in Texas and other states that have these laws.
