A study by the Crime Prevention Research Center noted that concealed-carry permits have boomed nationally, but particularly among women and minorities. “In eight states where we have data by gender, since 2012 the number of permits has increased by 161 percent for women and by 85 percent for men,” the report says. From 2007 through 2015, concealed-carry permits issued by state and local governments increased about 75 percent faster among nonwhites than whites, according to the report. . . .

By the way, if you’re wondering why Mr. French is so bold in his claim that Amy is likely to save lives with her concealed-carry weapon, that’s because John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center has crunched the numbers and determined that people with concealed-carry permits are about the most law-abiding group of people in the nation.

Here are some excerpts from a story in The National Interest.

“Concealed-carry permit holders are nearly the most law-abiding demographic of Americans, a new report by the Crime Prevention Research Center says … ‘Indeed, it is impossible to think of any other group in the U.S. that is anywhere near as law-abiding,’ says the report, titled ‘Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States 2016.’”

So what group in the nation is better about obeying the law?

The article doesn’t say, though my guess is nuns.

If you guessed police officers, you’d be wrong.

“The study compared permit holders to police, who committed 703 crimes from 2005 to 2007, and 113 of those were firearm violations. ‘With about 685,464 full-time police officers in the U.S. from 2005 to 2007, we find that there were about 103 crimes per hundred thousand officers,’ the report reads. ‘For the U.S. population as a whole, the crime rate was 37 times higher—3,813 per hundred thousand people.’ … ‘We find that permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at less than a sixth the rate for police officers,’ the report says. ‘Among police, firearms violations occur at a rate of 16.5 per 100,000 officers. Among permit holders in Florida and Texas, the rate is only 2.4 per 100,000.10. That is just one-seventh of the rate for police officers.’”

“The whole point that I have tried to make in my book, ‘The War On Guns,’ is that there has been a systematic effort to make it more expensive for law-abiding citizens to purchase guns,” said John Lott, director of the Crime Prevention Research Center.

For example, Lott said, “background checks in D.C. cost $125.” Lott noted that this disproportionately affects “poor blacks in high crime urban areas,” who can’t afford to legally purchase the protection they need. “The background check system itself is essentially racist,” he noted. . . .

Women are another growing demographic among gun enthusiasts and represent a surging number of concealed carry permit holders in America. In fact, on July 28 Breitbart News reported a Crime Prevention Research Center study showing that twice as many women as men were getting concealed permits during President Obama’s second term. . . .

Critics of unions often frame them as private interest organizations that help only their members. In a 2011 column about Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s right-to-work crusade, commentator John Lott alleged, for example, that AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka was “fighting for some workers” but “hurting other workers.”

It is true that unions often limit their activities to matters concerning their membership. But it is wrong to conclude that this work does not help workers more generally or that unions don’t organize for the common good. . . .

Another myth is that of “the big bad gun lobby,” to use the words of Dr. John Lott, in which a money-loaded “gun lobby” defeats opponents and intimidates politicians through massive financial clout. A review of actual lobbying and political contributions in late 2015 concluded that the NRA is, in fact, a “relatively light spender compared to other corporations, interest groups and industries,” and trailed (by a large margin) outlays by the AARP, the dairy industry, the American Hospital Association, and various individual companies. Dr. Lott notes that gun-control groups substantially outspend the NRA – billionaire Michael Bloomberg (founder of the Everytown group) donated $28.6 million to federal candidates in the two years leading up to the 2014 congressional elections, compared to the NRA’s $982,000, 1/30th the amount spent by Bloomberg. Looking at TV-advertising expenditures in 2013, gun-control groups outspent gun-rights groups “by 7.4 to one, with 85 percent of their money coming from Bloomberg.” . . . .
