There has been some new media coverage of our new CPRC report on there being over 14.5 million concealed handgun permit holders in the US.
Paul Bedard, The Washington Examiner, August 10, 2016
The Crime Prevention Research Center said that last year alone a record 1.73 million were approved in states requiring them.
John. R. Lott Jr., president of the Center, added that as the number of concealed carry permits has increased, the murder rate has dropped.
Much of the surge in permits has come due to gun control threats from President Obama and highly-publicized mass shootings that have prompted several law enforcement officials to suggest that Americans arm up.
Lott detailed how the numbers have changed under Obama, writing:
“Previously, the increase in permits had been relatively slow, growing from roughly 2.7 million permit holders in 1999 to 4.6 million in 2007. But the number of concealed handgun permits exploded during the Obama presidency. In December 2011, the Government Accountability Office estimated that there were at least 8 million concealed handgun permits. By June 2014, it was 11.1 million. Now, in 2016, the number is up to over 14.5 million. In other words, during the eight years from 1999 to 2007, the number of permits increased by about 240,000 annually. During the next four years, the number of permits surged by 850,000 annually. Then, in 2012 and 2013, the yearly increase accelerated to 1,550,000. Then 1,690,000 last year and 1,730,000 this year.” . . .

Concealed-carry permit holders are the most law-abiding demographic of U.S. citizens, according to a recent report by the Crime Prevention Research Center.
The report, titled, “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across The United States 2016,” compared permit holders to the general population and then to police officers in Florida and Texas, two states which largely mirror the rest of the country.
The data revealed that from 2005 to 2007, “there were 103 crimes per 100,000 police officers,” while the U.S. population’s crime rate is 37 times that number.
Permit holders are convicted of felonies and misdemeanors at less than a sixth of the rate of police officers, according to the study. Officers also commit firearm violations, 16.5 per 100,000, seven times more frequently than permit holders, at only 2.4 per 100,000 in Texas and Florida. . . .

“Indeed, it is impossible to think of any other group in the U.S. that is anywhere near as law-abiding,” says the report, titled “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States 2016.”
From 2007 through 2015, permits issued by state and local governments increased by 215 percent, to more than 14 million Americans, according to the data. . . .

Americans now holding permits to pack a concealed weapon in public has soared 215 percent since 2007 to over 14.5 million, a record, according to a new report. The Crime Prevention Research Center said that last year alone a record 1.73 million were approved in states requiring them. John. R. Lott Jr., president of the Center, added that as the number of concealed carry permits has increased, the murder rate has dropped. . . .

The number of concealed-carry permit holders has skyrocketed over the last four years, noticeably in key battleground states and among women, according to a new report.
Two swing states have the highest number of permit holders in the country, with 1.58 million in Florida and 1.2 million in Pennsylvania.
Meanwhile, 549,000 have permits in Ohio, another 556,136 in Michigan, and 530,092 in North Carolina. Indiana has issued 728,976 permits. These are all states that President Barack Obama—who supports gun control—carried at least once in his presidential election campaigns.
Fifteen percent of Indianans have concealed-carry permits. Pennsylvania has 12.2 percent of the population holding permits, and another swing state, Iowa, has 11.5 percent of the population carrying concealed-carry permits. . . .

The number of concealed handgun permits has reached at least 14.5 million nationwide, marking a 215 percent spike since 2007, according to a recent report released by Crime Prevention Research Center’s President John. R. Lott Jr.
Some attribute the rise in weapon permits to Obama’s repeated gun control threats, prompting multiple law enforcement officials to advise Americans to arm up while they can. But highly publicized lone-wolf terror attacks and rising crime in many urban areas could also be potent contributors to the increased number of Americans packing heat. . . .

The number of Americans who hold concealed carry permits has grown by 215 percent since 2007, according to a Crime Prevention Research Center report.
“The number of concealed handgun permits exploded during the Obama presidency,” said John Lott Jr., the center’s president, according to the Washington Examiner.
Lott said there were 4.6 million concealed handgun permit holders in 2007, and now that number is over 14.5 million. The increase has been steady throughout Barack Obama’s presidency, by about 240,000 new permits each year.
The research center’s report noted that 1.73 million more permits were issued than in the previous year. A little over 6 percent of the U.S.’s total adult population now has a permit.
The report said that in ten states, more than 10 percent of adults have concealed handgun permits. Indiana has the most residents who hold concealed carry permits, at 15 percent of the population. South Dakota is second at 14.7 percent. . . .
The Patriot Post, August 10, 2016
The Crime Prevention Research Center recently released a study of crime related statistics to gun ownership, and specifically those gun owners with concealed carry permits. The report stated flatly, “It is impossible to think of any other group in the U.S. that is anywhere near as law-abiding” as concealed carry permit holders. In fact, the report showed that concealed carry holders were less likely to commit crimes than were the police.
Was it the fact that most states require individuals wanting to conceal carry to get a permit, which includes a background check, often training, and a willingness to navigate the process? In other words, are the types of individuals seeking to apply for conceal carry permits more apt to be law-abiding anyway? Not exactly. The report showed that, “In 2014, the seven states that allowed concealed carry without a permit had much lower rates of murder and violent crime than did the seven jurisdictions with the lowest percentage of permit holders. Indeed, the murder rate was 31 percent lower in the states not requiring permits. The violent crime rate was 28 percent lower. Compared to the rest of the country, the 25 states with the highest rates of permit-holding experienced markedly lower rates of murder and violent crime.” . . .

Yeah, we are!
The report, Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States 2016, arrived at this conclusion by comparing permit holders to law enforcement.
“With about 685,464 full-time police officers in the U.S. from 2005 to 2007, we find that there were about 103 crimes per hundred thousand officers,” the report reads. “For the U.S. population as a whole, the crime rate was 37 times higher—3,813 per hundred thousand people.”
Additionally, the study used data compiled from 1987-2015 in Texas and Florida as a model to compare permit holders with police and the overall population. The data showed “that permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at less than a sixth the rate for police officers.” . . .

John R. Lott Jr., President of the Crime Prevention Research Center, attributes the explosion in concealed carry permits to increasingly restrictive gun control measures being pushed by the Obama administration and democratic lawmakers. He went on to point out the absurdity of these ineffective and unconstitutional measures by pointing out that as the number of concealed carry permits has increased murder rates across the nation have dropped. Lott commented on Obama’s irrational gun control measures:
“Part of it is just Obama. We have had a big increase in people buying guns, but it’s pretty clear it’s broader, It’s not just the number of guns, it’s clear more people are using guns.”
The report states that approximatley six percent of Americans are registered concealed carry permit holders. However, the number of gun-carrying Americans is likely much higher as 11 states do not require permits for concealed carry. . . .

That number translates to more than 6 percent of the adult population in the U.S. permitted to carry a concealed weapon, according to the latest data from John R. Lott, Jr. of the Crime Prevention Research Center. The actual number of persons who actually carry handguns on a regular basis is likely higher, as 11 states no longer require a permit, according to Lott’s report. . . .
The New American, August 9, 2016
The latest study by John Lott’s Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) raised an interesting question: Could the enormous increase in gun ownership and the attendant increase in the issuance of concealed carry permits have an impact on the presidential election in November?
The increase has been astounding, according to Lott: “During President Obama’s administration, the number of concealed handgun permits has soared to over 14.5 million — a 215% increase since 2007.” More than six percent of the adult population in the country now has a permit to carry concealed, and women and minorities have been obtaining them at record rates. . . .

Prior national studies have found Rhode Island ranks near the bottom in percentage of population that has a concealed carry weapons permit. A 2014 report by the Crime Prevention Research Center found Rhode Island ranks below 0.5 percent per capita along with Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, California and other states. Top states include South Dakota, at 12 percent of the population with a concealed carry permit, followed by Indiana and Alabama. Some states don’t require a separate permit to carry a hidden handgun. . . .
