CPRC’s President, Dr. John Lott, speaks with host Jim Bohannon about President Obama’s push for Smart Gun Technology and the real issues that need to be addressed.
The President is encouraging the law enforcement community to act as guinea pigs (by basically bribing local officials that oversee funding of their police departments with federal funds) to test this technology. Many officers are not thrilled about this for good reason.
The radio signal that is necessary for the gun to recognize the user wearing the watch can be jammed. A smart criminal could use a jamming device to emit a jamming signal and prevent the gun from firing.
There is also the issue of the fingerprint recognition technology. For a police officer (or anyone), moisture or dirt being on their hands could easily cause the malfunction of the fingerprint reader when their life is on the line. Another problem is the fact that there are sensitive electronics in a smart gun that will no doubt be impacted by the shock/recoil from the firing of the gun.
Cost of this expensive technology is also an issue. If smart gun technology is ever mandated, it will be the most vulnerable people (poor minorities living in high crime urban areas) who will be priced out of being able to defend themselves.

The true reason so called smart gun technology is being pushed, is to eventually to gain control of them. First you push it onto law enforcement. Then the military and the general public. The untold secret is that once there are enough of them are out there, there is no need to confiscate them. The government can just shut down the signal, and render them useless, and the government has total control. The time proven mechanics of the simple use of a firearm is invaluable. Trying to put to much technology into the actual firing mechanism part of a firearm, is a big mistake.
