One big factor driving this trend? An explosion in the popularity of concealed-carry handgun permits. Data maintained by independent researcher and gun rights advocate John Lott suggests that the number of concealed carry permit holders jumped from around 3 million in the early 2000s to over 11 million by 2014. And more concealed carry permit holders means that more people are simply forgetting they have their guns on them when they go to the airport. . . .

After the U.K. handgun ban in January 1997, its homicide rate rose by 50 percent over the next eight years; the firearms homicide rate almost doubled. Today, the rate is about where it was before the ban — after an 18 percent increase in the police force, Mr. Lott says.
Australia began a buyback program in 1996. The government banned automatic and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. It also adopted a registration list. . . .

As governments restrict citizens’ right to own firearms, crime increases. In his book, “More Guns, Less Crime,” John Lott proves that fact. Abolishing the Second Amendment is not the answer. Citizens need the right to protect themselves. . . .
