Obama Dallas Police Memorial Service

A note on Obama’s claim about how easy it is for a teenager to obtain a gun

During his memorial address this afternoon by President Obama in Dallas he had this to say: “We flood communities with so many guns that it is easier for a teenager to buy a Glock than it is to get his hands on a computer or even a book” (see 1:14:10 into the clip).…

Correcting some of the errors in Obama’s address on executive actions on guns

Here are some false claims from Obama’s address yesterday.  Amazingly, even though Obama is engaged in obvious cherry-picking of facts and examples, the ones that he brings up are wrong.  The quotes from his address are indented and in italics.

But we are the only advanced country on Earth that sees this kind of mass violence erupt with this kind of frequency.

Obama and Bloomberg

President Obama and Michael Bloomberg meet in White House to discuss the Executive Actions Obama is Planning

President Obama’s meeting with other gun control advocates indicates that executive action on gun control is likely imminent.  From The Hill newspaper:

. . . Obama huddled with Bloomberg “as part of the administration’s continuing push to address gun violence in America,” the White House said in a statement.
“The two discussed ways to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have access to them and what more could be done at the state and local level to help address gun violence in America,” the White House added.

CPRC in the New York Daily News: “The myth of American gun violence”

John Lott’s piece at the New York Daily News starts this way:

In the wake of the murders in Charleston, President Obama has made more exaggerations and false claims about gun violence in America. He made two public addresses this past week — one to the nation on Thursday and one to the U.S.

The incredibly flawed FBI study on active shooters, CPRC original research

The figure using the FBI data pretty much summarizes their claim: from 2000 to 2013, fatalities from public shootings in the US have grown by an average annual rate of 16.4%. While the FBI report provides graphs illustrating “active shooting incidents,” not mass shootings, given the way that the report was written, the media has understandably interpreted the report as implying that mass public shootings have massively increased over time.…

Obama renews call for more gun control

On the one-year anniversary of the Navy Yard shooting, President Obama “called on Americans to renew the push for gun-control legislation”:

“One year ago, 12 Americans went to work to protect and strengthen the country they loved,” Obama said. “Today, we must do the same — rejecting atrocities like these as the new normal and renewing our call for common-sense reforms that respect our traditions while reducing the gun violence that shatters too many American families every day.” .
