In response to our piece in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg’s Gun Groups Keep Claiming That Dr. Lott Is A “Gun Lobby Shill”

1 Nov , 2019

The big response from Michael Bloomberg’s gun control advocates to my op-ed in the Wall Street Journal was that I was a “gun lobby shill.” It is a false claim that Shannon Watts and other gun control advocates have floated before and I have responded before. Neither the Crime Prevention Research Center nor I have received a $1 for any of our research.…

Another Media Matters attack: “WSJ gives discredited researcher John Lott a platform to falsely blame gun regulation for the Mexican Drug War”

26 Oct , 2019

Media Matters is upset again that a major news outlet has published John Lott’s work. In this case, the anti-conservative group is miffed that he had a piece in the Wall Street Journal.

WSJ gives discredited researcher John Lott a platform to falsely blame gun regulation for the MexicanDownload

Although Lott’s primary pro-gun research theory — that “more guns” equal “less crime” — has been repeatedly debunked over the years by academic researchers, the Journal is the latest major outlet to give him a platform to spread pro-gun nonsense.

Young Turks attacks Ben Shapiro for quoting the Crime Prevention Research Center’s research on Mass Public Shootings

2 Apr , 2019   Video

The Young Turk’s Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur spent a recent show attacking Ben Shapiro for referencing the Crime Prevention Research Center‘s research on Mass Public Shootings around the world (156,000 views as of March 21, 2019). Following an earlier attack by Snopes.com, Kasparian and Uygur argue that it is misleading to make comparisons across countries using per capita rates.…

The Rand Corporation’s dishonest report on gun control

23 Oct , 2018

The Rand Corporation reaches its conclusions on gun control by pointing to reasons that can’t be accounted for in its survey. It completely ignores studies that indicate that gun control is harmful.

Time after time, their justifications for excluding studies are simply false. When a study finds that there’s no statistically significant evidence that a particular law had an impact, Rand calls the results “uncertain” or “inconclusive.”

The Rand Corporation claims are shown in bold.…

Bloomberg’s Gun Groups Keep Claiming that Dr. Lott is a “gun lobby shill”

10 Jul , 2018

Over and over again, people working for Michael Bloomberg’s gun control organizations accuse Dr. John Lott of being a “gun lobby shill.” Neither Lott’s research nor the CPRC has received even $1 nor has he applied for funds from any gun organization or gun or ammunition manufacturer. Shannon Watts, founder of the Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action, tries to back up her allegation by referring to charges leveled by the Violence Policy Center in the 1990s.…

Yet another example of how Media Matters distorts what people say

31 Mar , 2018

Mr. Johnson’s Tweet is available here.  Media Matters has a long history of distorting what people have written or said (also here).  After pointing out that Hogg’s attacks on others “has gone beyond any acceptable bounds of political discussion,” the point of Dr. Lott’s question was whether he should be treated to the same types of attacks that he levels at others.…

Gun control advocates make it personal, claim opponents “have blood on their hands”

15 Feb , 2018

Notice that when gun control advocates supported laws that made it so that the Republican congressmen last year couldn’t defend themselves, did Republicans attack Democrats for having “blood on their hands.”  No, but that is a common attack for Democrats.  As noted below, Dr. John Lott has long been the subject of these claims.…

Did the National Research Council Report on “Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review” show that right-to-carry laws don’t reduce crime?

12 Aug , 2017

A frequent claim by gun control advocates is that the National Research Council (NRC) 2005 report, “Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review,” has “debunked,” “emphatically rejected,” “disproved,” or failed to support research showing that right-to-carry laws reduce crime.  It is not too surprising that gun control advocates and the media like to point to their interpretation of the NRC report because the studies that look at the data for the US normally find strong support for right-to-carry laws reducing violent crime.  …

A response to Pacific Standard mistake filled article on John Lott and the Crime Prevention Research Center

1 Jun , 2017

The left-wing Pacific Standard magazine has a very one-sided piece attacking Dr. John Lott. Lott spent 45 minutes talking to Peter Moskowitz, the author of the Pacific Standard article, before doing a debate on gun control at Baylor University. Below are some quotes from the article along with responses to those claims.…
