“Shaneen’s Law”: Both Democrats and Republicans in New Jersey moving to allow discretion in sentencing out-of-state residences carrying concealed handguns

Shaneen Allen’s prosecution in New Jersey for carrying her permitted concealed handgun from Pennsylvania is getting attention from the state’s politicians of both parties.  Here is the push from Democrat state Senator Jeff Van Drew.  From CBS New York:

Shaneen Allen was pulled over last year during a traffic stop and said she had a Pennsylvania concealed carry permit.

Given the debate over the 9-year-old with a gun, some examples of children who used guns to save the lives of family members

With all the discussion about possibly setting age restrictions on gun use after the tragic death of a firearms instructor in Arizona (see analysis here), here are a few examples of young children saving lives with guns.

The fearless 11-year-old took action when she saw the cougar following her 13-year-old brother as he was walking towards their home .

Ann Coulter’s discussion of affirmative action for police

Ann Coulter’s newest article has a detailed discussion of CPRC’s John Lott research on hiring in police departments. A copy of Lott’s research is available here. Ann Coulter’s piece contains this:

In a massive, detailed 2000 study of the effect of court-ordered affirmative action plans on police departments, economist John Lott found that the more minorities on a police force, the higher the rates of murder, manslaughter, violent crime, robbery and aggravated assault will be.

In Silvester v. Harris Federal District Court Judge Anthony W. Ishii rules that there is no evidence that a “cooling off” benefit exists from waiting periods

California Federal District Court Judge Anthony W. Ishii might have been appointed by Bill Clinton, but his decision that was released on Monday, August 25th still found:

There is no evidence that a “cooling off period,” such as that provided by the 10-day waiting period, prevents impulsive acts of violence by individuals who already possess a firearm.(fn) A waiting period for a newly purchased firearm will not deter an individual from committing impulsive acts of violence with a separate firearm that is already in his or her possession.

Illinois robbery rate has fallen by 20 percent since concealed handgun permits started being issued

Given the small percentage of Illinoisans who have obtained a concealed handgun permit, it is very doubtful that permitted concealed could have a significant impact on crime rates, though it might put criminals on notice and there were a few startling cases of self defense with permits in Illinois.  In one case in Chicago, a former soldier with a legal permit to carry stopped a gang from killing four people who had just left a party.
