Bloomberg’s School of Public Health Cherry Picked Claim that firearm homicides in Connecticut fell 40% because of a gun licensing law

The Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University put out this press release on a paper by Rudolph, Stuart, Vernick, and Webster:

A 1995 Connecticut law requiring a permit or license – contingent on passing a background check – in order to purchase a handgun was associated with a 40 percent reduction in the state’s firearm-related homicide rate, new research suggests.

But in a widely discussed op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled “The New Nationwide Crime Wave,” Heather Mac Donald recently made a startling claim: “Gun violence in particular is spiraling upward in cities across America.” She demonstrated this by citing murder rate increases in six cities.

For months John Lott had tried getting a response from the Department of Justice and the authors of a FBI report on “active shooters” regarding errors that the CPRC had found. Lott then published our research in the March 2015 issue of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, pointing out how the errors mistakenly lead to the conclusion that attacks were increasing over time.…

New Jersey Woman stabbed to death by ex-boyfriend while she was waiting for months for the police to approve her permit to own a gun

Carol Browne, 39, had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend and had put in a security system as well as cameras all around the outside of her house.  But those obviously had no effect on stopping her ex-boyfriend from stabbing her to death late this last Wednesday night.  Restraining orders work on after someone has broken them.  …

The robbery and shooting took place at 10:30 PM on Friday night just as the couple was leaving the Shell’s restaurant at 2101 East Fowler Avenue.  Without for the permit carrier’s fast actions, From Tampa Bay, Florida (CBS-TV Channel 10 News):

. . . According to Tampa Police Department, the two suspects approached the victims with a gun drawn while the victims were leaving the Shells restaurant.
