CPRC IN THE NEWS: WASHINGTON POST, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Raleigh’s WRAL, Pittsburgh’s WPXI TV, and Others

Washington Post, November 3, 2015

One big factor driving this trend? An explosion in the popularity of concealed-carry handgun permits. Data maintained by independent researcher and gun rights advocate John Lott suggests that the number of concealed carry permit holders jumped from around 3 million in the early 2000s to over 11 million by 2014.

CPRC in the Orange County Register: “Gun ownership, NRA retain popular support”

John Lott’s newest piece in the Orange County Register starts this way:

Despite several years of the billionaire former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and others spending hundreds of millions attacking the National Rifle Association, a new Gallup poll shows that people who don’t own guns have a favorable opinion of the NRA (by 7 percentage points).

What gun control advocates bring up when they have nothing else to say, More attacks against the CPRC by gun control advocates

Gun control advocates want to argue that the only reason that people would support gun ownership is because they are getting paid off by gun makers.  Shira Goodman, the Executive Director of CeaseFirePA, made this argument in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (on November 1, 2015).  Bizarrely, she had also just recently made the same claim during an October debate that I had with her at Duquesne Law School.  …

Interview with Brazilian Media over Legislation to Liberalize Brazilian Gun Control Laws

John Lott was interviewed by Gabriel Brust with Portugues do Brasil about the move to liberalize their gun laws (November 2, 2015):

With the advancement in the National Congress of the bill repealing the Disarmament Statute in force since 2003, making it less rigid rules for the acquisition of firearms, a war of conflicting numbers municia those who defend and who is opposed to changing the law.

21 defensive gun uses by concealed handgun permit holders covered by the news media during October

UPDATED to now include 21 cases in October (there are a couple of other cases where we can’t determine if a permit would have been necessary to have a gun, such as a defensive gun use at a business by an employee, that are not included in this list)

ORIGINAL POST: We have already posted a number of concealed handgun permit holders who have used guns defensively during October (see here, here, and here).  …

CPRC at Investor’s Business Daily: “Mass Incarceration: Tell Hillary Clinton Punishment Matters”

John Lott’s newest piece at Investor’s Business Daily starts this way:

It’s easy to forget that in 1991 the U.S. murder rate was well over twice what it is today. In a speech last week at Atlanta’s Clark University, Hillary Clinton showed she doesn’t understand her call for an “end the era of mass incarceration” will endanger lives.

CPRC at the Daily Caller: “The New York Times Keeps Getting Its Gun Facts Shockingly Wrong”

John Lott has a new op-ed at the Daily Caller:

Last week, a New York Times editorial shockingly claimed that American concealed handgun permit holders have been responsible for 763 non-self-defense deaths since 2007. The Times editorial cites these numbers as proof of the “myth of the vigilant citizen” and “foolhardy notion of quick-draw resistance.”

But the numbers they rely on from the Violence Policy Center are fatally flawed, quadruple counting legitimate self-defense cases as criminal murders and blaming suicides on permits when the suicides don’t even involve guns.

CPRC interviewed by Fox News about Concealed Handgun Permit Holder Stopping Robbery in Chicago

CPRC’s John Lott was interviewed by Fox News about a permit holder who stopped a robbery in Chicago:

. . . The incident could add more fuel to the ongoing debate about whether the proliferation of handguns is responsible for crime or if more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens can actually make people safer.

Will Brazil, long having some of the strictest gun control in the world and one of the highest murder rates, finally liberalize its gun laws?

Literally only a few percent of Brazilians are currently legally able to own guns, but Brazil has had one of the highest murder rates in the world (they are 24th in the first figure in this post).  From AFP about a draft law that could be voted on in November:

Brazil, which has one of the highest murder tolls on the planet, could soon end most restrictions on gun ownership, risking what one critic called a “Wild West” scenario.
