With 2,415,481 FOID cards in Illinois, Only 15,877 have so far registered their firearms and 8,335 have registered their accessories, such as “large” capacity magazines

Dec 21, 2023 | Assault Weapon Ban, Gun Control Laws

Illinois has its new registration rules for grandfathered “assault weapons” (e.g., semi-automatic rifles) and large capacity magazines. Not everyone who has a FOID card may own a gun, though a large majority of those owning guns likely own standard magazines, which would require registration. With 2,415,481 FOID cards and registration starting on October 1st, 2023, so far only 15,877 guns have been registered and 8,335 accessories. Under the law signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on January 10, 2023, people only had three months from October 1st to January 1st, 2024 to register these items, so there is only a week-and-a-half left.

It appears that only a tiny fraction of people are registering their guns, accessories, or ammunition. Of course, there is another possibility, since some people might be storing their guns and accessories to other states, such as Indiana.
