The Use Of Machine Guns On Television Shows Never Stops: NBC’s Chicago PD

Mar 4, 2021 | Featured, Media Bias

As the Crime Prevention Research Center has pointed out many times, television crime shows seem to think criminals are constantly using machine guns to commit crime. This episode of NBC’s Chicago PD (Season 8, Episode 7, February 17, 2021) has machine guns being used four times during this show. They also make a big deal multiple times noting that these guns fire the dreaded .223 caliber bullet, with no mention that these are small caliber rounds, rounds that are even allowed to hunt deer in most states because they are more likely to wound than kill the deer. The guns are also referred to as “assault rifles” because they use the .223 rounds. In order to keep from violating copyrights and having the video pulled by NBC, we have only shown one example of a machine gun being fired and one time when they refer to the .223 rounds and calling it an assault rifle.

In real life, criminals generally use machine guns so rarely that a 2016 survey of prison inmates only broke down the numbers for uses in crime of handguns (11.2%), rifles (0.8%), and shotguns (1.1%). There are few rifles, and the survey did not even mention fully automatic weapons. There is a reason for that. Since 1934, there was only one possible known use ever of a civilian using a machine gun in a murder. And even before 1934, they were very rare.
